About Desomono Contraceptive Pill

Desomono Contraceptive Pill is a progestogen-only pill (POP), frequently referred to as the ‘mini-pill’. Each tablet contains 75 micrograms of desogestrel, a female sex hormone that provides highly effective protection against pregnancy. Unlike combined oral contraceptives, Desomono does not contain oestrogen, making it an ideal choice for women who are breastfeeding or those who cannot tolerate oestrogen-based medications. Desomono is distinct from traditional mini-pills because its dose is high enough to prevent ovulation (the release of an egg) in most cycles, offering a higher level of contraceptive efficacy similar to combined pills.

What Is Desomono Contraceptive Pill Used For?

Desomono is used as an oral contraceptive to prevent pregnancy. It works primarily by preventing the ripening and release of an egg (ovulation). Additionally, it thickens the cervical mucus to make it difficult for sperm to enter the womb and thins the lining of the uterus to prevent a fertilised egg from implanting.

Who Is Desomono Suitable For?

Desomono is suitable for most women of reproductive age, including those who are breastfeeding or smokers over the age of 35. Do not take Desomono if you:

  • Are allergic to desogestrel or any of the ingredients in the tablet
  • Have a thrombosis (blood clot in the legs or lungs)
  • Have or have had severe liver disease or jaundice
  • Have or are suspected of having a hormone-sensitive cancer (such as breast cancer)
  • Have unexplained vaginal bleeding

Speak to a healthcare professional before use if you:

  • Have ever had liver cancer
  • Have a history of breast cancer
  • Have diabetes or high blood pressure
  • Have epilepsy or tuberculosis
  • Have chloasma (yellow-brown skin patches, particularly on the face)

How to Take Desomono

  1. Start by taking the tablet marked with the correct day of the week.
  2. Follow the direction of the arrows on the blister strip until the pack is empty.
  3. Take one tablet at approximately the same time every day.
  4. If you start on Day 1 of your period, you are protected immediately.
  5. If starting on Days 2-5, use a barrier method (like condoms) for the first 7 days.

If you vomit or have severe diarrhoea within 3-4 hours of taking your pill, the active ingredient may not have been absorbed. Follow the advice for missed tablets.
