About Dretine Contraceptive Pill

Dretine is a combined oral contraceptive pill, frequently referred to as the pill. Each film-coated tablet contains two active ingredients: ethinylestradiol (0.03mg), an oestrogen, and drospirenone (3mg), a progestogen. These hormones work together to prevent pregnancy by inhibiting ovulation, thickening cervical mucus to block sperm, and altering the uterine lining to prevent egg implantation. Dretine is not only used for birth control but is also often prescribed to help regulate menstrual cycles, reduce heavy bleeding, and improve skin conditions such as acne. It follows a 21-day dosing schedule followed by a 7-day break.

Medication Name Dretine 0.03mg / 3mg Tablets
Active Ingredients Ethinylestradiol (0.03mg) and Drospirenone (3mg)
Medication Form Film-coated tablets
Used to Treat Prevention of pregnancy (contraception)
Available Sizes 21-tablet blister packs (3, or 6 month supplies)
Who Can Use It Women of reproductive age
Prescription Required? Yes – Prescription Only Medicine (POM)

What Is Dretine Used For?

Dretine is primarily used as a hormonal contraceptive to prevent unintended pregnancy. Because of its specific hormone combination, it is also effective at:

  • Reducing painful or heavy periods (menorrhagia)
  • Managing symptoms of Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS)
  • Improving moderate acne in women seeking contraception

Who Is Dretine Suitable For?

Dretine is suitable for most healthy women of childbearing age. However, it is not suitable for everyone. Do not use Dretine if you:

  • Have (or have ever had) a blood clot in a blood vessel of the legs, lungs, or other organs
  • Have a disorder affecting blood clotting (e.g., protein C deficiency)
  • Are due to have an operation or are off your feet for a long time
  • Have ever had a heart attack or stroke
  • Have severe high blood pressure or severe diabetes with vessel damage
  • Have very high blood fat levels (cholesterol or triglycerides)
  • Have “migraine with aura”
  • Have liver or kidney disease

How to Use Dretine Tablets

  1. Take one pill every day at approximately the same time.
  2. Follow the direction of the arrows on the strip until all 21 tablets are finished.
  3. Swallow the tablet whole with water if needed; do not chew.
  4. After 21 days, observe a 7-day break where you take no pills. A “withdrawal bleed” (similar to a period) should occur during this week.
  5. Start your next pack exactly 7 days after finishing the previous one, regardless of whether your bleeding has stopped.

Possible Side Effects of Dretine

Common side effects (may affect up to 1 in 10 people):

  • Headache or migraines
  • Nausea
  • Breast tenderness or pain
  • Depressive moods or mood swings
  • Irregular bleeding between periods (spotting)

Serious but rare side effects include blood clots in a vein or artery. Seek immediate medical help if you experience sudden leg swelling, chest pain, or difficulty breathing.

Warnings and Precautions

  • Blood Clots: Using Dretine slightly increases the risk of blood clots compared to not using hormonal contraceptives.
  • Cancer: Breast cancer has been observed slightly more often in women using combined pills, though the risk returns to normal after stopping.
  • Missed Pills: If you are more than 12 hours late taking a pill, contraceptive protection may be reduced. Refer to the leaflet for specific “missed pill” instructions.
  • Vomiting/Diarrhoea: If you vomit within 3–4 hours of taking a tablet, the active ingredients may not be absorbed. Treat this as a missed pill.

Storage Instructions

  • Store in the original packaging to protect from light.
  • Keep out of the sight and reach of children.
  • Do not use after the expiry date stated on the carton.
