What are Guardium Acid Reflux Control tablets?

Guardium Acid Reflux Control tablets help reduce the amount of acid your stomach makes. They’re used by adults who regularly get symptoms like burning in the chest (heartburn), acid coming up into the throat, or a sour taste in the mouth caused by acid reflux.

How does Guardium Acid Reflux Control work for heartburn & reflux?

Guardium contains esomeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). It blocks the action of proton pumps in the stomach lining that produce acid. By lowering stomach acid levels, it helps reduce irritation and discomfort caused by acid travelling back up the food pipe (oesophagus).

Who can use Guardium Acid Reflux Control?

Guardium is suitable for adults aged 18 and over. It is not recommended for children or adolescents under 18.

You should not take Guardium Acid Reflux if:

  • You are allergic to PPIs or if taking nelfinavir (HIV treatment).
  • You have persistent pain, weight loss, difficulty swallowing, jaundice, or severe liver problems

Speak to your GP or pharmacist before using Guardium if you:

  • Have had a stomach ulcer or gastrointestinal surgery
  • Are due for an endoscopy, urea breath test or Chromogranin A blood test
  • Have persistent or unexplained weight loss
  • Have been taking treatment for reflux or heartburn for 4 weeks or more
  • Have liver problems
  • Have ever had a skin reaction to medicines that reduce stomach acid
  • Are over 55 and experiencing new or changed reflux symptoms
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Are taking other medications (see the patient information leaflet for the full list)
  • Are lactose intolerant

How to take

  1. Take one 20 mg tablet once daily (any time, with or without food)
  2. Swallow whole with still water. Do not chew or crush.
  3. Use for up to 14 days only. If your symptoms have not improved, consult your doctor or pharmacist

If you have difficulty swallowing:

  1. Place the tablet in half a glass (about 100ml) of still water and stir it until it breaks up. Do not use fizzy or flavoured water. The mixture will not be clear and will contain small pieces of the tablet.
  2. Drink the mixture straight away or within 30 minutes. Make sure you stir it just before drinking.
  3. Rinse the glass with another half-glass of water and drink to make sure the full dose is taken.

You may need to take the tablets for 2-3 days in a row before you feel an improvement in your symptoms.

You can take Guardium Acid Reflux Control and products like Gaviscon Advance on the same day, but not at the same time. Guardium works by reducing acid production in the stomach and is taken once daily, usually in the morning. Gaviscon acts as a protective barrier on top of your stomach contents to stop acid from rising, and can be used as needed, especially if you get breakthrough symptoms later in the day. Wait at least 1 hour after taking Guardium tablets before using Gaviscon. Taking them too close together may affect how well Guardium is absorbed.

Take Guardium before a meal, preferably in the morning.

Yes, antacids can be used while taking Guardium if you need fast relief, as Guardium does not work immediately. Avoid using other PPIs or H2 blockers at the same time.

As a precaution, avoid use in pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist for further advice.
