About Hirudoid Cream

Hirudoid Cream contains heparinoid 0.3% w/w, a local anti-coagulant and anti-inflammatory agent designed to relieve pain and promote healing[cite: 3, 20]. It is specifically formulated to treat superficial thrombophlebitis (inflammation of the veins) and various types of bruising, including haematomas. By improving blood flow in the affected area, Hirudoid Cream helps reduce swelling and discomfort associated with minor injuries and inflammatory skin conditions.

What Is Hirudoid Cream Used For?

Hirudoid Cream is used as a local anti-inflammatory and anti-coagulant treatment to relieve symptoms of superficial thrombophlebitis, such as pain and vein inflammation. It is also highly effective for promoting the healing of bruises and haematomas by aiding the absorption of localized swelling and blood clots under the skin.

Who Is Hirudoid Cream Suitable For?

Hirudoid is suitable for adults and children over the age of 5.

Do not use Hirudoid Cream if you:

  • Are allergic to heparinoid or any listed ingredients [cite: 23]
  • Have broken skin or are applying to large areas of skin
  • Need to apply it near sensitive areas like the eyes, mouth, or genital regions [cite: 25]
  • Are treating a child under 5 years old

Speak to a healthcare professional before use if you:

  • Are pregnant or breast-feeding [cite: 38]
  • Have sensitive skin prone to contact dermatitis [cite: 40]

How to Use Hirudoid Cream

  1. Pierce the tube seal using the spiked top of the cap before the first application[cite: 48].
  2. Apply 2 to 6 inches (5-15 cm) of cream to the affected area depending on its size[cite: 49, 50].
  3. Gently massage the cream into the skin until absorbed[cite: 50].
  4. Apply up to four times a day; do not exceed this frequency[cite: 51, 52].
  5. Wash your hands thoroughly after use, unless the hands are the area being treated[cite: 54].

Possible Side Effects of Hirudoid Cream

While rare, some individuals may experience:

  • Local skin rash or irritation [cite: 59]
  • Allergic reactions (due to preservatives like methyl parahydroxybenzoate) [cite: 42]
  • Contact dermatitis (due to cetostearyl alcohol or lanolin) [cite: 40]

If you experience a rash, stop using the cream immediately and consult your doctor or pharmacist[cite: 60].
