If you’ve got a stubborn bruise or an inflamed vein close to the skin’s surface, Hirudoid Cream 50g is designed to help. It belongs to a range of topical creams and ointments used to ease bruising and vein inflammation.
Hirudoid Cream contains heparinoid, a heparin-like ingredient from a pharmacological group known as mucopolysaccharides. It improves the circulation in small blood vessels under the skin, supporting healing.
Superficial thrombophlebitis is inflammation of the superficial veins close to the skin’s surface, sometimes called phlebitis, and can involve some clot formation in the affected vein.
It’s used to relieve pain and inflammation associated with these conditions, supporting healing in the affected tissue.
Hirudoid Cream contains heparinoid, a heparin-like ingredient from a pharmacological group known as mucopolysaccharides. Hirudoid Cream is a cream that’s gently massaged into the skin over the affected area up to 4 times a day. Follow these steps:
Like all medicines, Hirudoid Cream may cause side effects, though not everyone gets them.
It can cause a rash in sensitive individuals, although this is rare. If this happens, stop using the cream and tell your doctor or pharmacist.
If you get any side effects not listed here, tell your doctor, pharmacy team or nurse. You can also report side effects via the Yellow Card Scheme on the MHRA Yellow Card website.

Hirudoid Cream isn’t suitable if you’re allergic to any of its ingredients, have broken skin or need to treat a large area of skin. It also shouldn’t be used near sensitive areas like the eyes or mouth or on children under 5. If you’re pregnant, breastfeeding or have sensitive skin, check with your doctor or pharmacist first.
Results can vary depending on the individual and the size of the area being treated, so it’s hard to put an exact timeframe on it. Apply the cream as directed, up to four times a day and speak to your doctor if your symptoms don’t improve or get worse.

Inflammation in the superficial veins under the skin, known as thrombophlebitis, can develop after an injury, from prolonged pressure on a vein or alongside a small blood clot forming close to the skin’s surface. It often causes localised pain, redness and swelling along the affected vein.
Hirudoid Cream and Hirudoid Gel both contain the same active ingredient, heparinoid, but they’re different formulations. The gel has a lighter, cooling texture that some people find more soothing, while the cream tends to suit drier skin better. Speak to your pharmacist if you’re not sure which one to choose.
