About Synphase Contraceptive Pill

Synphase Contraceptive Pill is a combined oral hormonal contraceptive used to prevent pregnancy. It contains two active hormones: norethisterone (a progestogen) and ethinylestradiol (an oestrogen), which work together to stop ovulation and make it difficult for sperm to reach an egg.

Synphase is a phasic contraceptive pill designed to mimic the natural changes in hormones during the menstrual cycle. Each pack contains different coloured tablets with varying hormone strengths to provide reliable and effective contraception when taken correctly.

What Is Synphase Used For?

Synphase is used for reliable long-term contraception to prevent pregnancy. It works by stopping the release of an egg from the ovaries, thickening cervical mucus to block sperm, and changing the lining of the womb to prevent implantation.

Who Is Synphase Suitable For?

Synphase may be suitable for women seeking effective hormonal birth control.

Do not take Synphase if you:

  • Are allergic to norethisterone, ethinylestradiol, or any ingredient
  • Have a history of blood clots, stroke or heart attack
  • Have severe liver disease or liver tumours
  • Have or have had breast, womb, cervical or vaginal cancer
  • Have unexplained vaginal bleeding
  • Have severe migraine
  • Are pregnant or think you may be pregnant

Speak to a healthcare professional before use if you:

  • Have high blood pressure, diabetes, kidney or heart disease
  • Have migraines, epilepsy or depression
  • Have gallstones, fibroids or irregular periods
  • Smoke, especially if over 35 years old

How to Take Synphase

  1. Start the first tablet on the first day of your period.
  2. Take one tablet daily, at the same time each day.
  3. Follow the correct colour sequence in the blister strip.
  4. After 21 tablets, take a 7-day break.
  5. Start the next pack after 7 days, even if bleeding continues.

If you are more than 12 hours late taking a tablet, use additional contraception such as condoms for the next 7 days.

Possible Side Effects of Synphase

Common side effects may include:

  • Nausea or stomach upset
  • Headaches
  • Breast tenderness
  • Weight gain
  • Irregular vaginal bleeding

Serious (rare) side effects:

  • Blood clots (DVT or pulmonary embolism)
  • Stroke or heart attack
  • Severe allergic reaction

Seek urgent medical help if you experience chest pain, shortness of breath, leg swelling, severe headaches, or vision changes.

Warnings and Precautions

  • Does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
  • The risk of blood clots increases in smokers over 35.
  • Some medicines may reduce effectiveness.
  • Contains lactose.

Storage Instructions

  • Store below 25°C.
  • Store in original packaging to protect from light and moisture.
  • Keep out of sight and reach of children.
