You can take Utovlan to delay your period if you’d rather not have one during a holiday, special event or other important occasion.
Utovlan can also be prescribed to treat or manage:
Utovlan contains norethisterone, a progestogen that’s similar to the natural female hormone progesterone. Progesterone helps control your menstrual cycle and the womb lining that builds up each month.
Towards the end of your cycle, progesterone levels naturally fall. This drop causes the womb lining to shed, which causes your period. Taking Utovlan keeps progestogen levels elevated, so the lining stays in place and your period is delayed.
When you stop taking the tablets, hormone levels fall and your period will usually start within 3 days.
Utovlan is suitable for adult women aged 18 and over. Our pharmacist will check this is right for you before prescribing.

If you want to delay your period, you’ll need to start Utovlan 3 days before it’s due. Starting at the right time gives the tablets a chance to work before your period would normally begin. Once you stop taking them, your period will usually arrive within 3 days.

Utovlan is a branded version of norethisterone. Provera Tablets contain a different progestogen called medroxyprogesterone acetate. Often considered a safer alternative for patients with higher BMI, smokers, or blood clot risk factors
Desogestrel is a progestogen-only contraceptive pill, and Utovlan isn’t a contraceptive, so it can’t replace it. If you take desogestrel, keep taking it as normal and tell our pharmacist before starting Utovlan.
