Zithromax is used to treat bacterial infections caused by susceptible organisms. Within sexual health services, it is widely prescribed for the treatment of chlamydia (Chlamydia trachomatis). It may also be used for chest, throat, ear, skin, and soft tissue infections when clinically appropriate.

Zithromax is a brand name for the antibiotic azithromycin, so both contain exactly the same active ingredient. Azithromycin is the generic name, and it works in the same way whichever version you take. The difference comes down to branding and usually price, with generic azithromycin often costing less than branded Zithromax.
Zithromax is a prescription-only medicine in the UK, so it isn’t available to buy over the counter. Take your capsules at least an hour before or two hours after a meal, not with food. Don’t take Zithromax at the same time as ergot medicines used for migraines and tell the pharmacist about anything else you take, as medicines like certain heart rhythm treatments, statins and blood thinners can interact with it. There’s no specific interaction between alcohol and Zithromax, so an occasional drink is unlikely to stop the antibiotic working. That said, drinking, particularly heavily, can make side effects like nausea and an upset stomach feel worse. Your body also recovers better from an infection when you’re rested and well hydrated, so it’s sensible to limit alcohol until you’ve finished the course
