What is Losec MUPS?

Losec MUPS is a dispersible gastro-resistant tablet containing 20 mg of omeprazole used to treat conditions caused by excess stomach acid. MUPS stands for “Multiple Unit Pellet System” – a special formulation that allows the tablet to be dispersed in water, making it easier to swallow for those who have difficulty taking standard tablets.

How Does Losec MUPS (Omeprazole) Work?

Losec MUPS contains the active ingredient omeprazole, which belongs to a group of medicines called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). These work by targeting the “proton pumps” in your stomach lining – the cells responsible for producing stomach acid.

When you take Losec MUPS, the omeprazole blocks these pumps, significantly reducing the amount of acid your stomach makes. This reduction in acid helps in several ways: it allows any damaged areas in your oesophagus or stomach to heal, prevents further damage from occurring, and relieves uncomfortable symptoms like heartburn and indigestion.

The dispersible formulation means the active ingredient is released in a controlled way, providing long-lasting acid suppression throughout the day. Most people notice their symptoms improving within a few days, though it may take up to four weeks to experience the full benefits.

What is Losec MUPS Used For?

Losec MUPS dispersible tablets are used to treat several conditions related to excess stomach acid:

  • Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) – a condition where stomach acid flows back into the oesophagus, causing heartburn and discomfort
  • Heartburn and acid reflux – the burning sensation in your chest and the unpleasant taste of acid in your mouth
  • Stomach ulcers – painful sores in the lining of your stomach
  • Duodenal ulcers – ulcers that develop in the first part of the small intestine
  • Helicobacter pylori infection – when used alongside antibiotics to eliminate this bacteria that can cause ulcers
  • Ulcers caused by NSAIDs – treatment and prevention of ulcers linked to anti-inflammatory pain medications
  • Zollinger-Ellison syndrome – a rare condition where the stomach produces too much acid

Your doctor or pharmacist will determine which condition Losec MUPS is treating and advise you on the appropriate length of treatment.

Who Can Use Losec MUPS?

Losec MUPS is suitable for adults who need treatment for acid-related conditions. The dispersible formulation makes it particularly useful for people who have difficulty swallowing standard tablets, including elderly patients.

However, Losec MUPS may not be suitable for everyone. You should consult your doctor or pharmacist before using Losec MUPS if you:

  • Are allergic to omeprazole or any other ingredients in the tablets
  • Are allergic to other proton pump inhibitor medicines
  • Are taking a medicine containing nelfinavir (used to treat HIV infection)
  • Have severe liver problems
  • Are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding
  • Have ever had a skin reaction after treatment with a medicine similar to Losec MUPS
  • Are due to have a specific blood test called Chromogranin A

Before starting to take Losec MUPS, always let your doctor or pharmacist know about any medications you’re taking and any medical conditions you have. If you experience persistent stomach pain, unintentional weight loss, or difficulty swallowing, see your doctor before starting treatment, as these may be signs of a more serious condition.

How to Take Losec MUPS

Losec MUPS dispersible tablets offer flexible dosing options, making them easier to take than standard tablets.

Option 1: Disperse in Water

  1. Place the tablet in a glass with approximately 2 tablespoons (30ml) of still water. Do not use sparkling water or any other liquid.
  2. Stir until the tablet breaks up and forms a cloudy mixture. The tablet won’t dissolve completely – you’ll see small pellets in the liquid.
  3. Drink the mixture within 30 minutes. Stir it again just before drinking.
  4. Rinse the glass with another half glass of water and drink this too, to make sure you’ve taken all the medicine.

Option 2: Swallow Whole

If you prefer, you can swallow Losec MUPS tablets whole with a glass of water. Don’t chew or crush the capsules.

When to Take Losec

  • This medication should be taken in the morning, at least half an hour before food, for the best absorption
  • Try to take it at the same time each day for the best results
  • If you’re taking it twice daily, take one dose in the morning and one in the evening

Like all medications, Losec MUPS can cause side effects, although not everyone experiences them. Most side effects are mild and improve as your body adjusts to the treatment.

Losec MUPS 20mg FAQs

MUPS contains omeprazole as its active ingredient. MUPS stands for “Multiple Unit Pellet System”, which is a special dispersible formulation of omeprazole. While both contain the same active ingredient and work in the same way, Losec MUPS has the advantage of being dispersible in water, making it easier to take for people who have difficulty swallowing standard omeprazole tablets.

Your doctor will tell you how long to take Losec MUPS. The duration depends on your condition – some people need short-term treatment for a few weeks, while others may need longer-term management. Don’t stop taking Losec MUPS without speaking to your doctor first, even if you feel better.

If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember on the same day. If you don’t remember until the next day, skip the missed dose and continue with your normal schedule. Don’t take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose.

No, you shouldn’t cut, crush, or chew Losec MUPS tablets. The tablets contain special pellets designed to protect omeprazole from being broken down by stomach acid. If you cut or crush the tablet, it won’t work properly. If you have difficulty swallowing the tablet whole, use the dispersible method by placing it in water and drinking the mixture as directed.

Alcohol doesn’t interact directly with omeprazole, but it can irritate the stomach and worsen reflux. Limiting alcohol may help your symptoms.
