What do Omeprazole tablets do?
Omeprazole targets tiny pumps in your stomach’s lining, called ‘proton pumps’, which release the acid needed for digestion. Omeprazole blocks these pumps, reducing the amount of acid in your stomach, which helps heal and prevent conditions such as acid reflux, heartburn, stomach ulcers and indigestion.
How long does Omeprazole take to work?
Omeprazole typically starts working one to two hours after taking it, but it may take a few days to reduce symptoms for conditions such as stomach ulcers. You may notice improvement in acid reflux symptoms quickly after taking Omeprazole, but you should continue taking it as advised by your GP or pharmacist to achieve the best results.
Who can take Omeprazole?
Omeprazole is suitable for most adults. You should not take it if you:
- Are allergic to any of its ingredients
- Are allergic to other medicines containing other proton pump inhibitors
- Taking a medication containing nelfinavir (used for HIV infection)
How to take Omeprazole Tablets
Omeprazole should be taken at the same time every day, ideally in the morning, and swallowed whole with a glass of water. You can take Omeprazole tablets with or without food.
You should not chew or crush them.
If you forget to take your dose, take it as soon as possible unless your next dose is due in 12 hours or less, in which case you should skip the missed dose. Do not take 2 doses to make up for the one you’ve missed.
If you’re unsure how to take Omeprazole, speak to your pharmacist or read the patient information leaflet.
How effective is Omeprazole?
Omeprazole is very effective for treating stomach acid problems in adults and children, quickly reducing symptoms. For most people, it works well, is safe, and is also suitable for long-term conditions where too much acid is made.
A clinical study on long-term Omeprazole treatment in resistant gastroesophageal reflux disease concluded that treatment using Omeprazole long-term is highly effective and safe for helping to control symptoms of reflux esophagitis.
