About Promethazine Hydrochloride Tablets

Promethazine Hydrochloride 10mg Tablets are a versatile sedating antihistamine used to manage a variety of conditions. They work by blocking histamine, a natural substance in the body that causes allergic reactions, and by acting directly on the brain to help you feel more relaxed or prevent motion sickness. This medication is commonly used for the short-term treatment of insomnia in adults and as a sedative for children, as well as for relieving symptoms of hay fever, pet allergies, and skin rashes like hives.

Promethazine Hydrochloride is suitable for adults and children over the age of 5 (for tablets). It is available in the following pack size:

What Is Promethazine Hydrochloride Used For?

Promethazine Hydrochloride is used to treat allergic conditions such as hay fever, nettle rash (hives), and reactions to insect bites. It is also highly effective as an antiemetic to prevent and treat motion sickness (travel sickness). Because of its sedating properties, it is frequently used for the short-term management of difficulty sleeping (insomnia) in adults and as a paediatric sedative.

Who Is Promethazine Hydrochloride Suitable For?

This medication is suitable for adults and children aged 5 years and over. For children under 5, a liquid version (elixir) is usually recommended.

Do not use Promethazine Hydrochloride if you:

  • Are allergic to promethazine or any other phenothiazines
  • Are taking Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs) or have taken them in the last 14 days
  • Are in a coma or have central nervous system depression

Speak to a healthcare professional before use if you:

  • Have asthma, bronchitis, or other breathing problems
  • Have epilepsy, heart problems, or liver/kidney disease
  • Have glaucoma or a prostate condition
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding

How to Take Promethazine Hydrochloride Tablets

  1. Always follow the dosage instructions provided by your pharmacist or the product leaflet.
  2. Swallow the tablets whole with a glass of water. Do not chew them.
  3. For travel sickness, take the dose the night before your journey.
  4. For allergies, it can be taken once at night or twice during the day depending on the severity.
  5. If using for sleep, take the tablets approximately 20–30 minutes before bedtime.

Avoid drinking alcohol while taking this medicine, as it will increase the sedative effects.

Possible Side Effects of Promethazine Hydrochloride

Common side effects:

  • Drowsiness, dizziness, or blurred vision
  • Dry mouth, nose, or throat
  • Feeling tired or disoriented

Uncommon/Rare:

  • Confusion (especially in the elderly)
  • Headaches or nightmares
  • Difficulty passing urine
  • Skin sensitivity to sunlight

If you experience a severe allergic reaction (swelling of the face/tongue, difficulty breathing), seek medical attention immediately.

Warnings and Precautions

  • May cause significant drowsiness; do not drive or operate machinery until you know how it affects you.
  • Avoid direct sunlight, as this medicine can make your skin more sensitive to UV rays.
  • Do not use for more than 7–10 days without consulting a doctor.
  • Keep out of reach of children, as overdose can be very dangerous.

Storage Instructions

  • Store in the original package to protect from light.
  • Keep the container tightly closed and store below 25°C.
  • Do not use after the expiry date stated on the carton.
