What are Avomine Tablets?

Avomine Travel Sickness Tablets are an effective travel sickness treatment that help prevent and relieve nausea and vomiting during journeys. They contain promethazine teoclate, an anti-emetic from the phenothiazine group, which works by calming the signals in your brain that cause feelings of sickness.

Avomine 25mg tablets help reduce the symptoms that can occur when travelling by car, boat, or plane. They are suitable for adults and children over 10 years, with adjusted doses for younger children aged 5–10 years.

What are Avomine Tablets used for?

Avomine can be used to:

  • Prevent travel sickness on long or short journeys
  • Treat travel sickness symptoms if they start during travel
  • Manage nausea and vomiting from other causes, including after surgery
  • Help with vertigo (giddiness or light-headedness)

How does Avomine work?

Promethazine in Avomine blocks histamine (H1) receptors in the brain’s vomiting centre, helping reduce motion-related nausea. It also has a mild sedative effect, which can make travel more comfortable if sickness is accompanied by restlessness.

Who can take Avomine Travel Sickness Tablets?

Avomine Travel Sickness Tablets are suitable for adults and children over 5 years old.

They should not be taken by children under 2 years old, people allergic to promethazine, other phenothiazines, or any ingredients in the tablets. They are also not suitable for those who have taken MAOI antidepressants in the last 14 days or people with CNS depression.

Speak to a doctor or pharmacist before use if you have glaucoma, epilepsy, heart, liver, kidney or bladder problems, asthma, bronchitis, or certain stomach conditions.

How to Take Avomine Tablets

When taking Avomine Tablets, you should always follow the dosage exactly as advised by your healthcare professional. Children over 10 years can take the lower adult dose, whereas children aged 5-10 years should take half of the lower adult dose.

Avomine Tablets FAQs

Yes. If you begin to feel unwell during travel, take one tablet immediately. You may take another in the evening and a third tablet the following evening if needed. This approach can help reduce existing symptoms and prevent them from worsening.

Yes, Avomine Travel Sickness Tablets often cause drowsiness, especially when you first start taking it. You should avoid driving, cycling, or operating machinery until you know how it affects you. The sedative effect can be useful on long journeys where relaxation helps.

No. Alcohol can increase the sedative effects of Avomine Tablets, making you feel excessively sleepy or dizzy. Combining the two may also affect your coordination and concentration.

Avomine should only be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding if advised by a doctor. In breastfeeding, it may cause irritability or excitement in the baby, so it is generally avoided unless the benefit outweighs the risk.

When taken before travel, Avomine Tablets start working within a couple of hours to help prevent sickness. If taken after symptoms begin, it may take a few hours for relief. For maximum effectiveness, it’s best to follow the prevention schedule for your journey type.

Do not take Avomine for more than seven days without medical advice. If symptoms persist or worsen after this time, seek professional guidance.

You must tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking:

  • Anticholinergic medicines
  • Hypnotics (sleeping tablets)
  • Tricyclic antidepressants or sedatives
  • Medicines for stomach cramps, Parkinson’s disease, or bladder problems

Avomine can interact with these and other medicines, altering their effects or increasing side effects.

Yes. The same dosing schedule applies as for other types of travel sickness. For long sea journeys, start the night before departure. For short boat trips, take it 1–2 hours before sailing.

Yes. Promethazine can help manage vertigo by reducing the signals in the brain that cause dizziness and nausea. If prescribed for this reason, follow your pharmacist or doctor’s specific dosing instructions.
