How Does Dalacin-T Lotion Work?

Dalacin-T Lotion is a prescription-only topical antibiotic that contains the active ingredient clindamycin phosphate at a strength of 1% (10mg per ml). It’s specifically designed to treat acne in adults by targeting the bacteria responsible for breakouts.

Clindamycin works by killing Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes), the bacteria that live on your skin and cause acne. When these bacteria multiply inside your pores and hair follicles, they trigger inflammation, redness, and spots.

When applied to the affected areas, the antibiotic penetrates deep into your pores where acne-causing bacteria thrive. By reducing the number of these bacteria it helps calm inflammation, clear existing spots, and prevent new breakouts from forming.

This topical lotion is particularly effective for mild to moderate acne, especially when other treatments like benzoyl peroxide or topical retinoids alone haven’t provided enough improvement. The lotion needs to be used consistently as prescribed to maintain bacterial control and keep your acne under control.

What is Dalacin-T Lotion Used For?

Dalacin-T Lotion is used to treat acne in adults by targeting the bacteria that cause spots and inflammation. It helps reduce the symptoms of acne, including:

  • Redness and swelling
  • Pimples and pustules
  • Blackheads and whiteheads
  • Inflamed spots

Who Can Use Dalacin-T Lotion?

Dalacin-T Lotion is suitable for adults with acne who need an antibiotic treatment to help control their breakouts.

However, it may not be suitable for everyone. You should not use Dalacin-T Lotion if you:

  • Are allergic to clindamycin, lincomycin, or any other ingredients in the lotion
  • Have a history of inflammatory bowel disease or antibiotic-associated colitis
  • Have previously had severe gastrointestinal reactions to antibiotics

Before using, speak to your doctor or pharmacist if you:

  • Frequently suffer from diarrhoea
  • Have had colitis or severe bowel problems
  • Are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding
  • Have sensitive skin or other skin conditions

How to Apply Dalacin-T Lotion

  1. Shake the bottle well before each use.
  2. Wash the affected area with a mild cleanser and pat it completely dry. Allow your skin to dry completely for a few minutes before applying.
  3. Apply a thin layer of Dalacin-T 1 topical lotion twice a day (once in the morning and once in the evening) to the entire affected area, not just individual spots.
  4. You can use a cotton pad or clean fingertips to spread the lotion evenly across the skin.
  5. Wash your hands before and after applying the lotion.
  6. Replace the cap tightly after use and store the bottle as directed.

Continue using the topical lotion as prescribed by your doctor, even if your acne begins to improve. Stopping treatment too early may cause your symptoms to return. Most people need to use it consistently for several weeks before seeing the full benefits.

Side Effects of Dalacin-T Lotion

Like all medications, Dalacin-T Lotion can cause side effects, although not everyone experiences them. Most side effects are mild and affect the area where the treatment was applied.

Dalacin-T Lotion Alternatives

If Dalacin-T Lotion isn’t suitable for you or you’re looking for other acne treatment options, there are several alternatives available:

Other Topical Antibiotics

  • Zineryt – Contains erythromycin and zinc acetate, applied twice daily to treat acne
  • Duac Gel – Combines clindamycin with benzoyl peroxide for enhanced antibacterial action

Topical Retinoids

  • Differin Gel – Contains adapalene, which unblocks pores and reduces inflammation
  • Epiduo Gel – Combines adapalene with benzoyl peroxide for dual-action treatment

Benzoyl Peroxide Treatments

  • Acnecide Gel – Available in 5% strength, kills acne-causing bacteria

Oral Antibiotics

For more severe acne, your doctor may recommend oral antibiotics like doxycycline or lymecycline alongside topical treatments.

If you’re searching for Dalacin-T lotion alternatives because the product has been discontinued or is out of stock, speak to your doctor or pharmacist about which alternative would be most suitable for your skin type and acne severity.

Dalacin-T Lotion Warnings

  • Stop using immediately and contact your doctor if you experience severe or persistent diarrhoea, bloody stools, or severe stomach pain, as these could be signs of pseudomembranous colitis (a serious bowel condition).

  • Do not apply to broken, damaged, or severely inflamed skin.
  • Dalacin-T Lotion contains cetostearyl alcohol and methyl parahydroxybenzoate (methylparaben), which may cause allergic reactions or local skin irritation in some people.
  • Speak to your doctor before using Dalacin-T if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
  • For external use only. Do not swallow. If accidentally swallowed, seek medical advice immediately.a

Dalacin T Topical Lotion FAQs

Dalacin-T Lotion has been discontinued in the UK. Pfizer, the original manufacturer, produces an unbranded version that is still available. There are also other treatments that contain clindamycin or work in a similar way for acne.Your doctor or pharmacist can recommend suitable alternatives such as Zindaclin or Duac Gel. At Click2Pharmacy, we can help you find an appropriate alternative treatment through our online acne clinic.

Most people start to see improvement in their acne within 2 to 6 weeks of using Dalacin-T Lotion consistently. However, it can take up to 8 to 12 weeks to see the full benefits of treatment. It’s important to continue using the lotion as prescribed, even if you don’t see immediate results. Your skin needs time to respond to the antibiotic, and stopping too early may prevent it from working effectively.

Dalacin-T Lotion doesn’t typically cause purging in the way that retinoids can. Purging happens when treatments that increase skin cell turnover bring underlying spots to the surface more quickly. Since clindamycin works by killing bacteria that cause acne rather than increasing cell turnover, it’s less likely to cause this effect.

However, some people may experience a slight worsening of their acne in the first few weeks as their skin adjusts to the treatment. If your acne significantly worsens or doesn’t improve after several weeks, speak to your doctor or pharmacist.

Dalacin-T should only be used during pregnancy if clearly needed. If you are breastfeeding, speak to your doctor before use, as clindamycin can pass into breast milk. Breastfeeding should be stopped if treatment continues.

Dalacin-T contains cetostearyl alcohol and methyl parahydroxybenzoate, which may cause allergic skin reactions or contact dermatitis. If you develop severe irritation or rash, stop using the lotion and speak to your doctor.
