How to Take Varenicline Tablets

Success in stopping smoking is more likely when you are fully motivated. To give yourself the best chance, follow these steps to set your target date:

  • Pick Your Quit Date: You should usually decide on a specific day to stop smoking during your second week of treatment, between Day 8 and Day 14.
  • Flexible Options: If you cannot set a date within the first two weeks, you may choose a target quit date at any point within 5 weeks of starting the medication.
  • Keep a Reminder: It is helpful to write your chosen quit date directly on your medication pack as a visible reminder.

General Administration

  • How to Swallow: Tablets must be swallowed whole with a drink of water.
  • With or Without Food: You can take your doses either with a meal or on an empty stomach.
  • Consistency: It is important to take your medicine regularly at the same times every day.

Dosing Schedule

Varenicline treatment begins with a lower dose using white (0.5 mg) tablets before moving to light blue (1 mg) tablets[cite: 83, 84].

Week Days Dosage Instructions
Week 1 Days 1–3 Take one white 0.5 mg tablet once daily.
Days 4–7 Take one white 0.5 mg tablet twice daily (once in the morning and once in the evening).
Week 2 Days 8–14 Take one light blue 1 mg tablet twice daily (once in the morning and once in the evening). This is typically the week you stop smoking.
Weeks 3–12 Day 15 to End Continue taking one light blue 1 mg tablet twice daily until the end of your treatment course.

Important Information

  • Missed Doses: If you forget a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is within 3 to 4 hours of your next scheduled dose, skip the missed one. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten tablet.
  • Extended Treatment: If you have successfully quit after 12 weeks, your doctor might suggest another 12 weeks of treatment to help prevent a relapse.
  • Kidney Health: If you have severe kidney disease, you should speak to your doctor before starting treatment as you may require a lower dose.
