About NuvaRing

NuvaRing is a flexible combined hormonal contraceptive vaginal ring used for the prevention of pregnancy. It contains two female sex hormones, etonogestrel and ethinylestradiol, which are slowly released into the bloodstream to prevent ovulation and make it harder for sperm to reach the womb.

NuvaRing is a low-dose hormonal contraceptive that offers long-term, reliable birth control when used correctly. Each ring is worn inside the vagina for 3 weeks, followed by a 1-week break during which a withdrawal bleed usually occurs.

NuvaRing is available in the following pack sizes:

What Is NuvaRing Used For?

NuvaRing is used for long-term prevention of pregnancy. It works by preventing the release of an egg from the ovaries and altering cervical mucus to make it difficult for sperm to reach the egg.

Who Is NuvaRing Suitable For?

NuvaRing is suitable for most adult women of reproductive age.

Do not use NuvaRing if you:

  • Have or have had a blood clot in your legs, lungs, or other organs
  • Have clotting disorders or a history of stroke or heart attack
  • Have migraine with aura
  • Have severe liver disease or liver tumours
  • Have breast or genital cancers
  • Have unexplained vaginal bleeding
  • Are allergic to etonogestrel, ethinylestradiol, or other ingredients
  • Are taking hepatitis C medicines containing ombitasvir/paritaprevir/ritonavir and dasabuvir or glecaprevir/pibrentasvir

Speak to a healthcare professional before use if you:

  • Have epilepsy, diabetes, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol
  • Smoke, especially if over 35
  • Have inflammatory bowel disease, SLE, or a history of depression

How to Use NuvaRing

  1. Wash your hands before handling the ring.
  2. Remove the ring from the sachet.
  3. Press the sides of the ring together and gently insert it into the vagina.
  4. Leave the ring in place continuously for 3 weeks.
  5. Remove the ring after 3 weeks and take a 7-day break.
  6. Insert a new ring after 7 days.

If the ring is out for more than 3 hours, contraceptive protection may be reduced.

Possible Side Effects of NuvaRing

Common side effects:

  • Headache or migraine
  • Nausea and abdominal pain
  • Vaginal thrush or irritation
  • Breast pain
  • Acne
  • Weight gain

Uncommon:

  • Mood changes or low mood
  • Dizziness
  • Urinary tract infections

Rare but serious:

  • Blood clots in veins or arteries
  • Stroke or heart attack

Warnings and Precautions

  • NuvaRing does not protect against HIV or other sexually transmitted infections.
  • Do not use with female barrier methods such as diaphragms or cervical caps.
  • Regularly check that the ring is in place.
  • Stop using and seek urgent medical help if you notice symptoms of a blood clot.

Storage Instructions

    • Store below 30°C.
    • Keep in the original packaging to protect from light and moisture.
    • Do not use if dispensed more than 4 months ago.
  • Keep out of sight and reach of children.
