What Is Loperamide?

Loperamide effectively treats diarrhoea by slowing down an overactive bowel. This allows more water and salts to be absorbed into the body and helps to reduce the frequency and urgency of bowel movements.

How Does Loperamide Work?

Loperamide slows down your intestines, giving your body more time to absorb fluids and nutrients. This helps make your stools firmer and reduces diarrhoea.

Who Can Use Loperamide?

Loperamide Capsules are suitable for most adults with short-term diarrhoea or IBS-related diarrhoea. However, you should not use Loperamide if you:

  • Are allergic to loperamide hydrochloride or any other ingredients listed in this medicine.
  • Have severe diarrhoea after taking antibiotics.
  • Are experiencing a flare-up of an inflammatory bowel condition like ulcerative colitis.
  • Are constipated or have a swollen stomach.
  • Have acute dysentery with blood in your stools and a high fever.

Speak to your GP or pharmacist if you have liver disease, diarrhoea lasting more than 48 hours, or severe diarrhoea causing significant fluid and electrolyte loss.

If you’re still unsure whether Loperamide is suitable for you, read the patient information leaflet or speak to a medical professional.

How To Use Loperamide

For short-term diarrhoea

  • Take two capsules initially, followed by one capsule after each loose bowel movement.

For IBS-related diarrhoea

  • Take two capsules initially, followed by one capsule after each loose bowel movement (or as advised by your doctor or pharmacist).
  • Stay within the stated dose of six capsules in 24 hours.
  • For repeated attacks, use for a maximum of two weeks, but not for any one attack lasting longer than 48 hours.

Loperamide Capsules FAQs

Yes, Loperamide is available over the counter at most pharmacies. However, you can easily buy Loperamide online from our stomach and digestion clinic, and we’ll deliver it straight to your door.

Loperamide may interact with other medicines, including ritonavir (for HIV), quinidine (for heart issues or malaria), oral desmopressin (for excessive urination), itraconazole or ketoconazole (for fungal infections), and gemfibrozil (for high cholesterol). Always check with your GP or pharmacist before combining Loperamide with other medications.

While there is no direct interaction, it’s best to avoid alcohol when experiencing diarrhoea, as it can lead to dehydration and worsen your symptoms.

If you take too many Loperamide capsules, seek immediate medical advice. Symptoms of an overdose may include increased heart rate, irregular heartbeat, uncoordinated movements, and drowsiness.

If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, speak with your GP or pharmacist before taking Loperamide. Small amounts of the medication may pass into breast milk, so different treatments may be recommended.

Loperamide usually reduces diarrhoea symptoms within one hour of taking the first dose. However, the exact time can vary based on the severity of your condition and individual response.

Loperamide can treat diarrhoea caused by food poisoning, but it’s essential to speak with your doctor or a pharmacist first.

Yes, rehydration therapy is essential when taking Loperamide, as your body can lose a lot of fluids and salts during diarrhoea. Drink plenty of liquids and consider rehydration solutions to replace lost fluids and electrolytes.
