What Is Olbas Oil Used For?

Olbas Oil is primarily used to relieve symptoms of the common cold, flu, and hay fever by clearing the airways through inhalation. The essential oils produce a cooling sensation that helps unblock the nose and ease breathing. Additionally, when applied topically to the skin, it acts as a mild analgesic to relieve muscular stiffness, backache, and rheumatic pain.

Who Is Olbas Oil Suitable For?

Olbas Oil is suitable for adults and children over 3 months of age for inhalation purposes. For use as a muscle rub, it is recommended for adults and children aged 12 years and over. Do not use Olbas Oil if you:

  • Are allergic to any of the essential oils or methyl salicylate
  • Are applying it to broken or irritated skin
  • Have an infant under 3 months of age

Speak to a healthcare professional before use if you:

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Are taking blood-thinning medications (like Warfarin) and intend to use it as a skin rub
  • Have a history of asthma or sensitive skin

How to Use Olbas Oil

  1. For Inhalation: Sprinkle the recommended number of drops onto a tissue or handkerchief. Place near (but not touching) the nose to breathe in the vapours.
  2. At Night: Place the tissue inside a pillowcase (out of reach for young children) to provide relief throughout the night.
  3. Hot Water Method: Add drops to a bowl of hot water and inhale the steam. Use caution with children to avoid scalding.
  4. As a Rub: Apply a small amount to the affected muscle and massage gently until absorbed.
  5. Post-Application: Wash hands thoroughly after applying to the skin.

Do not put drops directly into the nose or mouth. If accidentally swallowed, seek medical advice immediately.

Possible Side Effects of Olbas Oil

While side effects are uncommon, some users may experience:

  • Skin hypersensitivity or allergic reactions (rash)
  • Stinging or burning sensation at the application site

If the oil comes into contact with the eyes, it can cause severe irritation; rinse immediately with plenty of water.

Warnings and Precautions

  • Keep out of reach and sight of children at all times.
  • Avoid contact with eyes, plastic, and delicate fabrics.
  • If symptoms persist for more than 7 days, consult your doctor.
