What are Gina Vaginal Tablets For?

Gina Vaginal Tablets are used to treat vaginal atrophy symptoms caused by menopause. Vaginal atrophy happens when the vaginal wall becomes thinner, drier, and less elastic due to falling oestrogen levels after menopause.

Symptoms of vaginal atrophy include:

How do Gina Vaginal Tablets work?

Gina Vaginal Tablets contain estradiol, a naturally occurring oestrogen. During and after menopause, your body produces less oestrogen, which can cause the vaginal tissues to become thinner, drier, and less elastic.

Gina works by replacing the oestrogen locally in the vaginal area. This helps restore moisture to the vaginal tissues, reducing dryness, itching, and discomfort. Because it’s a local treatment applied directly to the affected area, only small amounts of oestrogen are absorbed into the bloodstream.

Who can use Gina Vaginal Tablets?

Gina Vaginal Tablets are suitable for postmenopausal women aged 50 and over who haven’t had a period for at least 1 year and are experiencing vaginal symptoms due to oestrogen deficiency.

Do not use Gina if you:

  • Are allergic to estradiol or any of the other ingredients
  • Have or have had breast cancer ever, or are suspected of having it
  • Have or suspect you have cancer that is sensitive to oestrogens, such as womb or ovarian cancer
  • Have any unexplained vaginal bleeding
  • Have or have ever had a blood clot in a vein (thrombosis)
  • Have previously been treated with oestrogen-only HRT, and you haven’t had your womb removed (hysterectomy)
  • Have or recently had a disease caused by blood clots in the arteries
  • Have a liver disease
  • Have a rare blood problem called porphyria
  • Have recent or suspected endometrial hyperplasia (e.g. if you have been referred for an ultrasound of your womb and are waiting for the results)
  • Have any change in the look/feel of the vulval area such as thickening or a lump, or you have noticed any shrinking or scarring in this area
  • Have a current vaginal infection before starting treatment
  • Have a condition called ‘vulval dermatoses’, or you have any genital skin disorders such as severe vaginal itching, itchy patches or rash
  • Have or suspect you have cancer that is sensitive to oestrogens, such as endometrial cancer (the current copy only mentions womb or ovarian cancer – should specify endometrial cancer)
  • Have any unexplained vaginal bleeding or have had any vaginal or genital bleeding since your periods stopped due to menopause
  • Have a blood clotting disorder (such as protein C, protein S or antithrombin deficiency)
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding

Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before using Gina if you:

  • Have endometriosis or fibroids
  • Have a history of blood clots
  • Have high blood pressure
  • Are receiving a type of HRT (including tablets and patches) that circulates in the blood
  • Have liver or kidney problems
  • Have diabetes
  • Have gallstones
  • Have migraines or severe headaches
  • Have lupus
  • Have asthma
  • Have a history of endometrial hyperplasia
  • Are switching from another vaginal oestrogen HRT

How to Use Gina Vaginal Tablets

Each Gina tablet comes preloaded in a single-use applicator. Follow these steps to use it:

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly
  2. Get into a comfortable position, either lying down or standing with one leg raised
  3. Remove one applicator from its packaging
  4. Hold the applicator and gently insert it into your vagina as far as is comfortable
  5. Press the plunger until you hear or feel a click – this releases the tablet
  6. Remove the applicator and dispose of it safely
  7. Wash your hands again

Initial dose: Use one vaginal tablet daily for the first two weeks.

Maintenance dose: After the first two weeks, use one tablet twice a week, leaving 3-4 days between each dose (for example, every Monday and Thursday).

Try to use Gina at the same time each day or on the same days each week to help you remember. It’s often easiest to insert the tablet at bedtime.

If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember. If it’s nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue as normal. Don’t double-dose to make up for a forgotten tablet.

Side Effects of Gina Vaginal Tablets

Like all medicines, Gina can cause side effects, though not everyone experiences them. Because Gina is a local treatment with very low doses of oestrogen, side effects are generally less common than with systemic HRT.

Common Side Effects

Uncommon Side Effects

For a complete list of side effects, read the patient information leaflet.

If you experience any severe side effects or signs of an allergic reaction, stop using Gina and seek immediate medical attention by calling 999 or going to A&E.

Reporting Gina Side Effects

If you notice any side effects, tell your doctor or pharmacist even if they’re not listed here. You can also report side effects through the Yellow Card Scheme. This helps improve the safety of this medicine.

Gina Vaginal Tablets Reviews

Gina for Vaginal Dryness FAQs

Gina and Vagifem are very similar – both are vaginal tablets containing the same active ingredient (estradiol) at the same strength (10 micrograms). They work in the same way to treat vaginal atrophy symptoms. The main difference is the brand name and manufacturer, but both are effective local HRT treatments for menopausal vaginal symptoms.

No, Gina requires a prescription in the UK. While it was previously available over the counter from pharmacies, it is currently a prescription-only medication. You can buy Gina through our online menopause clinic by completing a free consultation, which will be reviewed by one of our licensed pharmacists.

Most women start to notice an improvement in their symptoms within 2-4 weeks of starting treatment. However, it may take up to 12 weeks to experience the full benefits. Make sure you continue using Gina as prescribed, even if you don’t notice immediate results. Speak to a doctor if there hasn’t been an improvement after 3 months of treatment

Vaginal atrophy is a chronic condition, which means symptoms may return if you stop treatment. Many women use Gina for months or even years to maintain symptom relief. Your doctor or pharmacist will review your treatment regularly to make sure you’re using the lowest effective dose for the shortest time necessary, though long-term use is often appropriate for this condition.

Alternative treatments for vaginal atrophy include other vaginal oestrogen preparations like Vagifem tablets, Ovestin cream (which contains estriol), or vaginal oestrogen rings. Non-hormonal options include vaginal moisturisers and lubricants.

If you stop using Gina, your vaginal atrophy symptoms may gradually return as oestrogen levels in the vaginal tissues decrease again. The timeframe varies from person to person, but symptoms often come back within a few weeks to months of stopping treatment. If you want to stop using Gina, discuss this with your doctor or pharmacist first.

Because Gina is used vaginally and contains very low doses of estradiol, overdose is unlikely. However, if you accidentally use more tablets than prescribed or if someone swallows the tablets, contact your doctor or pharmacist for advice. If necessary, call 111 or seek medical attention.
