Blissel vaginal gel is used to relieve menopause symptoms affecting the vagina. In medical terms, this is known as vaginal atrophy due to menopause – a condition where the vaginal walls become thinner and less moist as oestrogen levels fall.
Symptoms of vaginal atrophy include:
Blissel is a vaginal oestrogen treatment containing estriol, a naturally occurring oestrogen. After menopause, oestrogen levels drop significantly, causing the vaginal tissues to become thinner, drier, and more easily irritated.
Unlike a lubricant, which provides only temporary moisture, Blissel addresses the underlying cause. Estriol is absorbed locally into the vaginal tissues, helping restore the normal vaginal environment by improving moisture, elasticity, and the condition of the vaginal lining.
Because it works locally rather than entering the bloodstream, Blissel has very low systemic absorption compared to HRT tablets or patches.
Blissel is suitable for postmenopausal women looking to treat vaginal dryness, irritation, or discomfort as a result of menopause.
Do not use Blissel if you:
Speak to your doctor before using Blissel if you have or have had any of the following, as they may require more frequent monitoring:
Blissel comes with a tube of gel and an applicator (cannula and plunger). Follow these steps to apply it:
It is recommended to use Blissel before going to bed. Some women notice a small amount of vaginal discharge after application – this is normal.
Starting dose: One applicator per day for the first 3 weeks.
Maintenance dose: After 3 weeks, reduce to one application twice a week.
If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember – unless you are more than 12 hours late, in which case skip that dose. Do not use a double dose to make up for a missed one.
Like all medicines, Blissel can cause side effects, although not everyone experiences them. Because Blissel works locally with very low absorption into the bloodstream, side effects are generally less common than with systemic HRT.

Vaginal atrophy is an ongoing condition, so many women use Blissel long-term to maintain symptom relief. Your doctor will review your treatment at least once a year to make sure you are still using the lowest effective dose. If your symptoms return after stopping, speak to your doctor about restarting treatment.
Blissel gel and estriol cream both contain the same active ingredient and work in the same way – delivering low-dose vaginal oestrogen locally to the vaginal tissues. The main difference is the formulation.
Some women find a gel easier to apply and less messy than a cream, while others prefer a cream. Other options for local vaginal oestrogen include pessaries and a vaginal ring. The best option is the one that suits your lifestyle and feels most comfortable to use. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure which is right for you.
Blissel and Ovestin both contain estriol and are used to treat vaginal atrophy due to menopause, but they come in different formulations. Blissel is a vaginal gel applied using an applicator, while Ovestin is available as a cream. Both deliver estriol locally with very low systemic absorption. The choice between them generally comes down to personal preference – some women find one formulation easier or more comfortable to use than the other. Your doctor or pharmacist can help you decide which is more suitable for you
Blissel is not a contraceptive and doesn’t provide protection against pregnancy. If it has been less than 12 months since your last period, or you are under 50, you may still need contraception. Blissel contains low doses of estriol and is not expected to affect hormonal contraceptives, but you should avoid using it alongside other locally applied vaginal treatments like diaphragms or cervical caps at the same time of application, as the gel may affect their fit. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist for personalised advice.
You can have intercourse while using Blissel. However, as the gel is applied vaginally, it is best to avoid sexual activity immediately after application. It is recommended to apply Blissel at bedtime, which helps minimise any disruption. If you or your partner experience any discomfort, speak to your doctor.
It can take several weeks of regular use before you notice a significant improvement in symptoms. If you are not seeing results after 12 weeks or your symptoms are getting worse, speak to your doctor. There may be another underlying cause for your symptoms, or an alternative treatment may be more suitable for you.
