What is Mirvaso gel?

Mirvaso gel is designed to help adults with persistent facial redness caused by rosacea. It gently reduces the visible blood flow beneath the skin, helping calm the appearance of redness, so your skin can feel more comfortable and look more even-toned throughout the day.

How does Mirvaso gel work?

The active ingredient in Mirvaso gel is brimonidine, a selective alpha-agonist. It temporarily narrows the widened blood vessels under your skin, which reduces blood flow to the skin, helping to make the redness less noticeable. You’ll usually start to see a difference in as little as 30 minutes, and the effects can last for up to 12 hours.

Who can use Mirvaso gel for facial redness?

Mirvaso is suitable for adults aged 18 and over with persistent rosacea symptoms.

It is not recommended for:

  • Children under 18, especially those under 2, due to risk of serious side effects.
  • People who have previously had an allergic reaction to brimonidine or any ingredients in the gel.
  • Patients taking MAO inhibitors or certain antidepressants (e.g. selegiline, imipramine).
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women, unless advised by a doctor.

If you have heart or circulation problems, low blood pressure, or liver/kidney issues, consult your pharmacist or doctor before use.

How To Use Mirvaso Gel

How to Open Mirvaso Gel

Mirvaso gel comes in a child-proof tube. To avoid spilling it, don’t squeeze the tube while opening or closing it.

To open it:

  • Push down on the cap and turn it to the left (counterclockwise).
  • Pull the cap off.

How to Apply Mirvaso Gel

It is important to start treatment with a small amount of gel, and gradually build up the dose as needed, up to a maximum of 1 gram per day (roughly 5 pea-sized amounts across the face).

  1. Make sure your face and hands are clean and dry before applying the gel.
  2. Apply a thin layer of Mirvaso gel to the affected areas on your face, avoiding your eyes, eyelids, lips, mouth and inside your nose. If this happens, rinse thoroughly with water.
  3. Wash your hands after applying the treatment.

Avoid using any other skin medicines or cosmetics immediately before applying Mirvaso gel. Wait until the gel has completely dried, then apply any other skin care products or medications.

Mirvaso Gel Ingredients

Active Ingredient: Brimonidine tartrate 3.3 mg/g

Inactive Ingredients: Carbomer, methylparahydroxybenzoate (E218), phenoxyethanol, glycerol, titanium dioxide, propylene glycol (E1520), sodium hydroxide, purified water.

Mirvaso Gel Alternatives

There are other treatments available if Mirvaso Gel isn’t right for you. Soolantra cream, Rozex, and azelaic acid creams like Finacea or Skinoren are commonly used for different types of rosacea.

While Mirvaso works by reducing redness, these alternatives are often better for bumps and spots (inflammatory rosacea). Speak to your GP or pharmacist to find suitable treatment options for your symptoms.

  • Keep out of sight and reach of children.
  • Store below 30°C. Do not freeze.
  • Don’t use past the expiry date on the carton.
  • Avoid contact with your eyes, lips, mouth, and open wounds.

Mirvaso Gel Reviews

FAQs

Drinking alcohol regularly may affect how Mirvaso works. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you drink often.

Mirvaso gel is a prescription-only medication, so you’ll need to consult with a doctor or pharmacist. When you purchase this product, we will ask you to complete a short online consultation to check if it is suitable. Our pharmacists will review your details and prescribe Mirvaso Gel if it is appropriate for your condition.

If your redness becomes worse, or you feel burning or discomfort, stop using Mirvaso and speak to your doctor or pharmacist. This happens to some people in the first few weeks, but the symptoms usually go away after stopping treatment.

You can apply makeup after Mirvaso Gel has dried completely. Wait a few minutes after applying the gel before using other skincare or cosmetic products.

Mirvaso is only licensed to treat facial redness caused by rosacea. It won’t help with acne, eczema, or other skin problems, and using it for other conditions could make symptoms worse.

If you are suffering from other skin conditions, speak to your doctor or pharmacist for an appropriate treatment plan.

You can often use Mirvaso Gel alongside other rosacea treatments, but it’s important to check with a doctor or pharmacist first.

  • Rozex (metronidazole) and Soolantra (ivermectin) are sometimes used together with Mirvaso, especially when rosacea also includes bumps or spots (inflammatory rosacea). These can usually be applied at different times of day (e.g. Mirvaso in the morning, Rozex or Soolantra at night), but this should be confirmed by your pharmacist or GP first.
  • Finacea gel and Skinoren cream (both contain azelaic acid) can also be used for rosacea, but combining them with Mirvaso may increase the risk of skin irritation. Your GP or pharmacist should advise you on whether to use them together, and how to space applications if appropriate.

Always follow medical advice when combining treatments, and stop using any product that causes increased burning, redness, or discomfort.
