Opticrom Eye Drops are used to treat and prevent allergic eye symptoms like redness, itching, and watering caused by hay fever or pollen allergies. They help calm irritation and protect against flare-ups during allergy season.
Opticrom 2% Hayfever Eye Drops contain sodium cromoglicate, an anti-allergy medicine that helps relieve and prevent the symptoms of hay fever and seasonal allergic conjunctivitis.
It works by blocking the release of histamine and other natural substances that your body produces when triggered by an allergen, such as tree pollen. These substances are what cause the irritation and inflammation in your eyes. By preventing this allergic response before it starts, Opticrom helps stop symptoms from developing and keeps your eyes feeling more comfortable throughout the pollen season.
Opticrom eye drops are suitable for adults and children aged 6 and over who experience hayfever-related eye symptoms, like redness, itchiness, or watering. However, at Click2Pharmacy, we can only sell this medicine for use by adults over 18.
However, Opticrom eye drops are not suitable for:
Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before using if:
For best results, use Opticrom eye drops regularly every day while pollen levels are high. This helps control your symptoms and prevent irritation from coming back.
If you wear soft contact lenses, remove them before using the drops. Wait at least 15 minutes before putting them back in, as benzalkonium chloride can be absorbed by lenses and may cause irritation.
If symptoms don’t improve within 2 days, speak to your pharmacist or doctor. If you need to use the drops for more than 14 days in a row, speak to your GP or pharmacist.
Like all medicines, Opticrom can cause side effects, although not everyone gets them. Most side effects are mild and go away quickly.
These effects usually only last a few minutes after applying the drops.
Stop using Opticrom and speak to a doctor straight away if:
For a full list of possible side effects, always read the Patient Information Leaflet
If you notice any side effects while using Opticrom, let your doctor or pharmacist know. Reporting how a medicine affects you helps healthcare experts better understand its safety.
You can also report side effects directly through the Yellow Card Scheme or by searching MHRA Yellow Card on the Apple App Store or Google Play.

You should start to notice relief within a couple of days. For best results, use Opticrom drops regularly throughout the hayfever season, even if your symptoms improve.
If you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or breastfeeding, it’s best to speak to your doctor or pharmacist before using Opticrom.
A prescription isn’t needed in the UK for Opticrom, and it can be bought over the counter from Click2Pharmacy’s Allergy Treatment Clinic. We have quick delivery options to make sure you get your hayfever eye medication as soon as possible.
You should remove your contact lenses before applying the drops. Wait at least 15 minutes before putting them back in. This is because Opticrom contains benzalkonium chloride, which can build up in soft lenses and may cause irritation.
Opticrom is only suitable for seasonal allergic conjunctivitis (also known as hayfever eyes). It won’t treat bacterial or viral conjunctivitis. If you think your eye condition is caused by an infection, visit our online Eye Health clinic, where you will find products like Brolene or Chloramphenicol eye drops, which may be more appropriate.
Opticrom can be used at the same time as taking oral antihistamines for added relief during allergy season. We have a range of prescription and over-the-counter allergy treatments available from our online Allergy Treatment clinic. Speak to your pharmacist to see if combining treatments is right for you.
Opticrom is intended for seasonal use during times when pollen levels are high. If you have allergic eye symptoms outside of hayfever season, talk to your pharmacist or doctor to check if another condition is causing your symptoms.
Opticrom is specifically formulated to treat eye symptoms caused by hayfever, such as itching, redness, and watering due to pollen exposure. It is not intended for treating eye irritation caused by other allergies, like pet hairs, dust mites, or household chemicals. If you have sensitive eyes or experience irritation caused by other allergens, speak to a pharmacist or GP to find a product that’s more suitable for year-round or non-seasonal use.
“Opticrom is a go-to option for anyone dealing with itchy, red, and puffy eyes during hayfever season. It’s fast-acting, easy to use, and works well when used regularly to prevent symptoms before they start.”
