Uses for Yasmin Contraceptive Pill

Yasmin is a combined contraceptive pill used to prevent pregnancy. This hormonal contraceptive is over 99% effective at stopping you from getting pregnant when taken correctly.

How Does Yasmin Work?

Yasmin is a combined contraceptive pill, which means it contains two types of hormones: ethinylestradiol (an oestrogen) and drospirenone (a progestogen).

These hormones work together in three main ways to prevent pregnancy:

  • Prevents ovulation – The hormones stop your ovaries from releasing an egg each month. Without an egg, pregnancy can’t happen.
  • Thickens cervical mucus – Yasmin makes the mucus at the entrance to your womb thicker, which makes it much harder for sperm to get through and reach an egg.
  • Thins the womb lining – The pill also thins the lining of your womb, making it less likely that a fertilised egg could implant and develop.

When you take Yasmin correctly, these three actions work together to provide highly effective protection against pregnancy.

Many women also find that taking Yasmin can help regulate their periods, reduce period pain, and make their monthly cycle more predictable. Some people notice that their skin improves while taking this pill, particularly if they struggle with acne.

Who Can Use Yasmin Contraceptive Pill?

Yasmin is suitable for most women who have started their period and who need contraception. However, it’s not right for everyone, and there are some situations where you shouldn’t take it.

Do not use Yasmin if you:

  • Have or have had blood clots in your legs, lungs, or other parts of your body
  • Have had a heart attack or stroke
  • Have angina or other heart conditions
  • Have migraines with aura
  • Have diabetes with complications
  • Have severe high blood pressure
  • You have started the menopause
  • Have or have had breast cancer or other hormone-sensitive cancers
  • Have liver disease or liver tumours
  • Are pregnant or think you might be pregnant
  • Are allergic to ethinylestradiol, drospirenone, or any other ingredients in Yasmin

You should speak to your doctor before taking Yasmin if you:

  • Smoke, especially if you’re over 35
  • Are overweight
  • Have a family history of blood clots, heart disease, or stroke
  • Have high blood pressure or high cholesterol
  • Have kidney problems
  • Have epilepsy
  • Have Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis
  • Have systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)

Your doctor or pharmacist will assess whether Yasmin is safe for you based on your medical history and any risk factors you may have.

How to Take Yasmin Pills

Taking Yasmin correctly is important to make sure it works effectively:

  • Take one pill at the same time every day for 21 days.
  • Swallow the tablet whole with water. You can take it with or without food.
  • After finishing the 21 tablets, have a 7-day break where you don’t take any pills.
  • During this 7-day break, you’ll usually have a withdrawal bleed, similar to a period.
  • Start your next pack after the 7-day break, even if you’re still bleeding.

Each pack of Yasmin has the days of the week printed on it to help you keep track. Follow the arrows on the pack, so you know you’re taking the tablets in the right order. Each strip contains 21 pills.

If you’re starting Yasmin for the first time, take your first tablet on the first day of your period. This will give you immediate contraceptive protection. If you start on any other day, you’ll need to use additional contraception (like condoms) for the first 7 days.

Try to take your Yasmin tablet at the same time each day to help you remember and to keep hormone levels steady in your body.

Side Effects of Yasmin Combined Pill

Like all medicines, Yasmin can cause side effects, though not everyone gets them. Most side effects are mild and often settle down within the first few months of taking the pill.

Common Side Effects

  • Headaches

  • Breast tenderness or pain
  • Mood changes or feeling low
  • Changes to your periods (lighter, heavier, or irregular bleeding)

Serious Side Effects

Stop taking Yasmin and seek immediate medical help if you experience:

  • Severe abdominal pain
  • Severe headaches or migraines that are worse than usual
  • Changes in your vision, speech, or coordination
  • Yellowing of your skin or eyes (jaundice)

Warnings & Precautions

  • Keep Yasmin out of sight and reach of children.
  • Store below 30°C in the original package to protect from light and moisture.
  • Do not use Yasmin after the expiry date shown on the packaging.
  • Combined contraceptive pills like Yasmin slightly increase your risk of blood clots, particularly in the first year of use or when restarting after a break.
  • If you need to stop taking the pill for any reason, speak to your doctor first.
  • Smoking increases your risk of serious cardiovascular side effects when taking the combined pill, especially if you’re over 35.
  • Yasmin does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Use condoms for protection against STIs.
  • If you have persistent vomiting or severe diarrhoea, Yasmin may not work properly. Use additional contraception until you’ve been well for 7 days.

Yasmin Birth Control Pill FAQs

You can buy Yasmin online in the UK from Click2Pharmacy’s online contraception clinic. You’ll need to complete a free online consultation, which will be reviewed by one of our pharmacists. If Yasmin is suitable for you, we’ll issue your prescription and deliver the medication directly to your door in discreet packaging.

Yasmin isn’t routinely available on the NHS because other combined contraceptive pills are considered equally effective and are available at a lower cost to the NHS. Your GP will usually prescribe an NHS-funded alternative, but you can purchase Yasmin privately if you prefer this particular brand.

No, Yasmin is not considered a high oestrogen pill. It contains 0.03mg (30 micrograms) of ethinylestradiol, which is a standard dose for modern combined contraceptive pills. Pills with 50 micrograms or more are considered high oestrogen pills.

There are no specific activities you need to avoid while taking Yasmin. However, if you’re having surgery or will be immobile for a long period (such as during long-haul flights), let your doctor know you’re taking the pill, as this can increase the risk of blood clots.

Yasmin can interact with some medications, including certain antibiotics (like rifampicin), anticonvulsants, antiretrovirals, and herbal remedies like St John’s Wort. These can make Yasmin less effective. Always tell your doctor or pharmacist about all medicines you’re taking, including over-the-counter products and herbal supplements.

Yes, you can delay your period with Yasmin by starting a new pack immediately after finishing your current one, without taking the usual 7-day break. You can continue this for up to two packs in a row. However, you may experience some breakthrough bleeding. Always speak to your doctor or pharmacist before doing this.

Yes, drinking alcohol doesn’t affect how Yasmin works. However, if you drink enough to make you vomit within 3-4 hours of taking your pill, it may not be fully absorbed. In this case, follow the instructions for missed pills.

Yasmin is not usually recommended while breastfeeding, especially in the first six months after giving birth. The hormones in Yasmin can reduce the amount of breast milk you produce and may pass into your milk in small amounts. Speak to your doctor about alternative contraception options that are safer during breastfeeding, such as the progestogen-only pill (also known as the mini pill).

Yasmin can improve acne for many women. The drospirenone in Yasmin has anti-androgen properties, which can help reduce acne and oily skin. However, some people may experience skin changes when starting any new contraceptive pill. If you’re concerned about acne, speak to your doctor.

Some women report weight changes while taking Yasmin, though it’s not clear if the pill directly causes this. Any weight gain is usually due to fluid retention rather than fat gain and is typically small (1-2kg). If you’re concerned about weight changes, speak to your doctor.

If you start taking Yasmin on the first day of your period, it works immediately. If you start on any other day of your cycle, you’ll need to use additional contraception (like condoms) for the first 7 days.

If you’re switching from another combined pill, start Yasmin the day after taking your last active pill from your old pack, or during your pill-free break. If you’re switching from a progestogen-only pill, you can start Yasmin on any day, but use additional contraception for 7 days. Always speak to your doctor or pharmacist for specific advice.

Yasmin and Lucette contain the same active ingredients. Lucette is a generic version of Yasmin. It contains exactly the same active ingredients (ethinylestradiol 0.03mg and drospirenone 3mg) in the same doses and works in the same way. The main difference is that Lucette is usually less expensive than the branded Yasmin.

If you miss a pill, what you need to do depends on when you missed it and how many you’ve missed. If it’s been less than 24 hours since your usual time, take the missed pill as soon as you remember and take the next one at your normal time. You’re still protected. If it’s been more than 24 hours, take the most recent missed pill and continue as normal, but you may need extra contraception for 7 days. Check the patient information leaflet for detailed instructions or contact your pharmacist.

Yasmin is not known to affect your ability to drive or operate machinery. However, if you experience side effects like dizziness or visual disturbances, don’t drive until these symptoms pass.
