How long can you stay on Mounjaro?

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a long-term weight loss treatment, not a quick fix. If you’re starting your journey with Mounjaro, one of the first questions you’ll probably have is: how long will I be taking this?

You might be weighing up whether it’s safe to stay on Mounjaro long-term. Or you might be concerned about what happens when you stop taking it.

How long can you stay on Mounjaro for weight loss?

There is no limit on how long you can take Mounjaro for weight loss. You can continue the treatment indefinitely, as long as you’re tolerating it well and still benefiting from it.

Your doctor or pharmacist will only continue to prescribe Mounjaro if you’re losing weight or maintaining your weight loss, and you’re not experiencing side effects that affect your quality of life. They’ll review your progress regularly to make sure the treatment remains appropriate for you.

Research shows that most people can reach their weight loss goals within 1-2 years of starting Mounjaro weight loss injections. Clinical trials show that weight loss tends to level off after around 18 months on the medication, with average weight loss of around 20.9% on the 15mg dose after 72 weeks.

However, reaching your goal weight doesn’t mean you have to stop. Some people choose to come off Mounjaro once they’ve achieved a healthy weight. Others prefer to stay on the medication long-term to help maintain their results or other health conditions, like their blood sugar levels for type 2 diabetes.

If you’ve purchased Mounjaro privately, you can stay on it for as long as your prescriber agrees it’s appropriate. However, if you’ve been prescribed Mounjaro via the NHS, current NICE guidelines don’t recommend using it beyond 2 years.

How long should you use Mounjaro?

Most people will achieve significant weight loss within the first 1-2 years of starting Mounjaro. Clinical trial data from the SURMOUNT-1 study show that 91% of people on the 15mg dose achieved weight loss of 5% or more after 72 weeks, and 63% achieved weight loss of 20% or more. This suggests that most people will reach meaningful weight loss goals within this timeframe.

The key question is: what happens after you reach your goal weight?

Some people will have developed sustainable lifestyle changes during treatment – healthier eating patterns, regular exercise, better sleep – that allow them to maintain their weight loss without medication. For these people, stopping Mounjaro once they’ve reached their target weight makes sense.

Others find that their appetite and food-related thoughts return when they stop taking Mounjaro. For them, staying on a maintenance dose long-term provides ongoing support for weight management.

The amount of weight you lose on Mounjaro doesn’t just depend on the medication itself. It depends on the healthy habits you’re able to develop and maintain while taking it. If you develop a healthier lifestyle during treatment, you’ll be more likely to maintain your weight loss in the long term – whether you stay on Mounjaro or not.

Long-Term Use of the Mounjaro Maintenance Dose

Once you’ve reached your goal weight, you might choose to stay on Mounjaro using a maintenance dose. This is the next dose you’ll take to help you maintain your weight loss rather than continue losing body weight.

The maintenance doses of Mounjaro are 5mg, 10mg, and 15mg. You’ll usually stay on one of these doses long-term. The 2.5mg, 7.5mg, and 12.5mg doses are typically used during the titration phase – the period when you’re gradually increasing your dose.

Determining the right maintenance dose will depend on how your body responds to the medication, your weight loss goals, and any side effects you experience.

Staying on a maintenance dose after reaching your goal weight gives you time to establish healthier habits that help you keep the weight off. While you’re on Mounjaro, you’ll find it easier to stick to a balanced diet and exercise routine because the medication helps reduce your appetite and food cravings.

You don’t have to stay on the maintenance dose forever. Once you’ve built sustainable habits and feel confident managing your weight, you can discuss stopping treatment with your pharmacist or doctor. However, many people find that staying on a maintenance dose long-term is the most effective way to manage their weight and prevent regain.

How long does Mounjaro stay in your system?

Mounjaro’s active ingredient, Tirzepatide, has a half-life of around 5 days. This means it takes approximately 5 days for half of the medication to leave your system. After you stop taking Mounjaro, it takes roughly 25 – 30 days (about 5 half-lives) for the medication to completely clear from your body.

Mounjaro reaches peak levels in your bloodstream around 24 to 72 hours after injection. This is when you’re most likely to feel the effects of the medication, including reduced appetite and any side effects like nausea.

Several factors can affect how long Mounjaro stays in your system:

  • Frequency of use: If you’ve been using Mounjaro regularly for a long time, it can build up in your body, which may increase how long it takes to clear completely.
  • Kidney and liver function: These organs process and eliminate the medication. If you have reduced kidney or liver function, Mounjaro may stay in your system longer.
  • Individual metabolism: Everyone’s body processes medication differently based on age, weight, and overall health.

While Mounjaro naturally clears from your system over time, you can support this process by staying well-hydrated to help your kidneys flush out the medication, maintaining regular physical activity to support circulation, and eating a balanced diet to keep your organs functioning optimally.

If you’re considering switching from Mounjaro to another GLP-1 weight loss medication like Wegovy.

What happens when you stop taking Mounjaro?

If you stop taking Mounjaro and don’t make the necessary lifestyle changes to support weight maintenance, you’ll likely regain some weight.

Clinical trial data show that people who stopped Mounjaro after 36 weeks had regained around 14% of their lost weight after one year. While they still maintained a 9.5% weight loss overall – a significant achievement – the trend showed that weight continued to be regained over time.

In comparison, people who stayed on Mounjaro continued to lose weight, achieving nearly 26% weight loss after 88 weeks.

This doesn’t mean you can’t successfully stop Mounjaro. It means the medication needs to be combined with lasting lifestyle changes. If you’ve developed healthier eating patterns, increased your physical activity, and addressed the underlying habits contributing to weight gain, you’ll have a much better chance of maintaining your results.

Staying on Mounjaro FAQs

How long can you take Mounjaro for diabetes?

If you’ve been prescribed Mounjaro for type 2 diabetes, you can take it for as long as it continues to help manage your blood sugar levels effectively and you’re tolerating it well. There’s no set time limit. Your doctor will review your progress regularly to make sure the treatment is still working for you. Some people with diabetes stay on Mounjaro long-term to maintain good blood sugar control.

How does Mounjaro work in the body?

Mounjaro works by mimicking two natural hormones in your body: GLP-1 and GIP. These hormones help regulate blood sugar levels and appetite. Mounjaro slows down how quickly your stomach empties, which helps you feel fuller for longer. It also helps your pancreas release the right amount of insulin when your blood sugar rises. This dual action makes it effective for both blood sugar control and weight loss.

What if I miss a dose of Mounjaro?

If you miss a dose or forget to inject Mounjaro, and it’s been less than 4 days since your missed dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it’s been more than 4 days, skip the missed dose and take your next dose on your regularly scheduled day. Don’t take two doses at once to make up for a missed dose. If you’re unsure what to do, contact your healthcare provider for guidance.

What is the Mounjaro prescription criteria?

Mounjaro can be prescribed for weight loss if you have a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI of 27 or above with a weight-related health condition such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or sleep apnoea.

You shouldn’t take Mounjaro if you’re pregnant, breastfeeding, have a history of medullary thyroid cancer, or have Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2. Your healthcare provider will assess your full medical history to determine if Mounjaro is suitable for you.
