Wegovy now comes in two forms: a weekly injection and a daily pill. Both contain semaglutide, but each form of Wegovy works differently in practice. Whether you take the pill or injection comes down to how each suits your routine and circumstances.

What is the Wegovy injection?
The Wegovy pen is a pre-filled, once-weekly subcutaneous injection of semaglutide. It is MHRA-approved and available in the UK through private prescription.
The dose starts at 0.25mg and increases gradually over several months to the standard 2.4mg maintenance dose, with a higher-dose option at 7.2mg for those who need further escalation.
Like all GLP-1 drugs, semaglutide works by mimicking a hormone released naturally after eating. It signals to the brain that you are full, slows gastric emptying, and reduces appetite. Because the injection delivers semaglutide directly into the bloodstream, absorption is consistent regardless of when you eat.
What is the Wegovy pill?
The new Wegovy pill is an oral semaglutide, FDA-approved in December 2025 as the first GLP-1 pill approved for weight management rather than diabetes. It contains 1.5mg, 4mg, 9mg or 25mg of semaglutide and isn’t the same as Rybelsus, which uses a lower dose and is licensed only for type 2 diabetes.
To take the Wegovy pill correctly, swallow it whole with no more than 120ml of plain water on an empty stomach, immediately after waking up. You then need to wait 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything other than water, or taking other medication. Semaglutide can be poorly absorbed orally, and anything that interferes with that window significantly reduces how much the body absorbs.
The MHRA review is ongoing, with UK availability expected in 2026.
Are Wegovy pills as effective as injections for weight loss?
The weight loss results from both forms are close, but not identical.
In the OASIS 4 trial, participants taking the 25mg Wegovy pill lost an average of 13.6% of body weight over 64 weeks, with nearly 30% achieving 20% or more weight loss. Among those who stayed on treatment and took it correctly throughout, the average reached 16.6%, with around one in three achieving 20% or more.
In the STEP 1 clinical trial, the 2.4mg injection produced an average of 14.9% over 68 weeks.
The pill’s results are more sensitive to adherence. The 13.6% figure includes people who didn’t always follow the administration rules. With the injection, absorption doesn’t depend on timing or food, so results are less variable.
Wegovy 7.2mg produced an average weight loss of 20.7% in the STEP UP trial, though this figure reflects an idealised scenario where all patients remained on treatment.
Are the side effects of the Wegovy pill and injection the same?
Both forms work through the same mechanism, so the side effect profile is similar. The most common are gastrointestinal:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea
- Constipation
These are most noticeable when starting treatment or increasing the dose, and they usually settle over time. The injection can also cause short-lived localised reactions at the injection site.
If you take Wegovy in pill form incorrectly – with food, coffee, or more than 120ml of water – it can affect how the drug behaves in the gut, which may influence the pattern of side effects alongside reducing absorption.
Both weight loss medications carry the standard semaglutide warnings around pancreatitis and thyroid risk, and neither is suitable for people with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2.
Wegovy Tablets vs Injection: Convenience and Lifestyle
For people who don’t like needles, the pill removes that barrier entirely. It can also be kept at room temperature, making it easier to travel with than the injection, which needs to stay refrigerated.
However there is a fasting requirement. The pill must be taken first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, with a 30-minute wait before eating, drinking, or taking other medication. For people with a consistent morning routine, this is manageable, but it is a real constraint for shift workers or frequent travellers crossing time zones.
The injection is more forgiving. There are no timing rules or food restrictions, and missing a dose by a day or two doesn’t carry the same consequences. With the pill, how the pill is taken is just as important as consistency. The pill may also suit frequent travellers, as it doesn’t need refrigeration.
Who is the Wegovy pill better for?
- People who are needle-averse or have needle anxiety
- Frequent travellers who find cold storage impractical
- Those who can commit to a consistent morning routine with strict fasting
- People with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 or above with a weight-related condition such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol
- Those who prefer a tablet-based routine over weight loss injections
Who is the Wegovy injection better for?
- Those who want the option to escalate to a higher dose (Wegovy 7.2mg)
- Anyone who finds the daily fasting requirement difficult to maintain
- People who meet the Wegovy BMI requirements – a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 or above with a weight-related health condition
- Those who haven’t responded adequately to diet and exercise alone
- People who want a once-weekly routine rather than a daily commitment
Can I switch from Wegovy injections to the Wegovy pill?
Switching is possible but must be done under clinical supervision. The only confirmed dose equivalence is that the Wegovy 2.4mg injection corresponds to the Wegovy 25mg pill. For anyone on a different dose, a pharmacist will advise on the right starting point.
In most cases, you’d take your last injection as normal and wait seven days before starting the pill. The two should never be taken at the same time. The first few weeks can feel different – the injection delivers a steady weekly dose, while the pill has more day-to-day variability in absorption. Appetite may feel less consistent at first, but this usually settles as your body adjusts.
