What is Cocois Ointment used for?

Cocois is a medicated scalp ointment used to treat dry, scaly skin disorders of the scalp. It’s suitable for adults and children aged 6 and over and can be used for:

  • Scalp psoriasis
  • Scalp eczema
  • Dandruff
  • Seborrhoeic dermatitis
  • Other inflammatory scalp conditions causing irritation and excessive scaling

Cocois works by softening and breaking down the thickened, hardened skin that builds up on the scalp in these conditions. It also relieves the itching and irritation that often comes with them.

How does Cocois Ointment work?

Cocois contains three active ingredients that work together to tackle the symptoms of dry, scaly scalp conditions.

  • Coal tar solution and sulphur reduce the excessive hardening, thickening and scaling of the skin. Both are mildly antiseptic and relieve itching, while sulphur provides additional antifungal action.
  • Salicylic acid helps to soften and lift built-up scale from the scalp, making it easier to remove when you shampoo and allowing the other ingredients to reach the skin more effectively.

When used together, these ingredients help to calm the scalp, reduce scaling and relieve irritation.

Who can use Cocois Ointment?

Cocois scalp ointment is suitable for adults and children aged 6 and over. Children aged 6 to 12 should only use it under medical supervision.

Don’t use Cocois if you:

  • Are allergic to coal tar solution, salicylic acid, sulphur or any other listed ingredient
  • Have broken, infected or acutely inflamed skin
  • Have acute pustular psoriasis
  • Are in the last 3 months of pregnancy

Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before using Cocois if you:

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have asthma or a family history of aspirin allergy, as Cocois may irritate the airways
  • Are currently using any other topical scalp treatments

How To Take Cocois Ointment

  1. Part your hair to expose the affected areas of the scalp
  2. Apply a thin ribbon of Cocois ointment directly to the scalp
  3. Gently rub the ointment in and leave it on for approximately one hour
  4. After one hour, shampoo out thoroughly with warm water
  5. Wash your hands immediately after application and avoid contact with eyes and mouth

For severe scaliness, apply daily for 3 to 7 days until control is achieved. For milder scaliness, use intermittently as needed (for example, once a week).

If your condition doesn’t improve after the first week, or symptoms persist after four weeks, consult your doctor.

Side Effects of Cocois Ointment

Like all medicines, Cocois can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

  • Skin irritation
  • Inflammation of the hair follicles (folliculitis)
  • Acne-like eruptions
  • Hair loss
  • Discolouration of skin and hair
  • Sensitivity to sunlight (rare)

If you have asthma or a family history of aspirin allergy, Cocois may cause difficulty breathing or tightness in the chest. This is very rare.

If you experience any side effects or adverse reactions, speak to your doctor or pharmacist. You can also report side effects directly via the Yellow Card Scheme.

Cocois Ointment FAQs

Cocois scalp ointment is available without a prescription. You can buy it over the counter from a pharmacy or order it online from Click2Pharmacy and have it delivered straight to your door.

Cocois is licensed for dry, scaly scalp conditions, including psoriasis, eczema and dandruff. It’s not suitable for all types of psoriasis. If you have acute pustular psoriasis, where blisters filled with pus appear on the skin, you shouldn’t use Cocois and should speak to your doctor about alternative treatments.

Yes, don’t use Cocois after the expiry date printed on the label. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month. Store the ointment below 25°C and keep it out of the sight and reach of children.

Cocois won’t bleach fabrics but it can leave stains that are difficult to shift. Washing affected clothing or bedding may reduce product build-up but won’t remove it completely, so it’s worth protecting anything you don’t want marked before applying. Bear in mind that fabric carrying ointment residue also increases the fire risk, so take care around open flames even after washing.

Tell your doctor or pharmacist about any other medicines or scalp treatments you are currently using before starting Cocois. Some products may not be suitable to use alongside it. Your pharmacist can advise if it’s safe to combine Cocois with other treatments for your condition.

Cocois and Sebco ointment are different branded products but they share the same three active ingredients, coal tar solution, salicylic acid and sulphur, at the same concentrations. Both are used to treat dry, scaly scalp conditions such as psoriasis and eczema. The main differences are in the manufacturer and the inactive ingredients used in the formulation.
