What is Nitrolingual sublingual spray used for?

Nitrolingual Pump Spray is a medicine used to quickly relieve chest pain or effort-related shortness of breath caused by angina. It comes in a small spray bottle and is used under the tongue (sublingually), so it starts working fast. Each spray delivers a measured dose of a medicine called glyceryl trinitrate (GTN), which helps improve blood flow to the heart.

Nitrolingual can treat angina symptoms when they happen, or to prevent chest pain before doing things that might trigger it, like exercise or climbing stairs.

How does Nitrolingual Spray work for angina?

Angina happens when your heart doesn’t get enough oxygen-rich blood, usually due to narrowed blood vessels. This can cause a heavy, tight, or painful feeling in your chest.

Nitrolingual Spray works by relaxing and widening your blood vessels. This allows more oxygen to reach your heart, which helps stop the pain. The spray starts working within minutes and usually lasts about 30 minutes.

Using it under the tongue helps the medicine get into your bloodstream quickly, so you get fast relief when you need it most.

Who can use Nitrolingual Pump Spray?

Nitrolingual Pump Spray is suitable for adults who have been diagnosed with angina. It’s used to relieve sudden chest pain or to prevent angina attacks before doing something that might trigger symptoms, like exercise or stress.

You should not use Nitrolingual if you:

  • Are allergic to nitrates or any of the ingredients
  • Have very low blood pressure or severe anaemia
  • Have certain serious heart or circulation problems
  • Are taking medicines for erectile dysfunction (e.g. sildenafil, tadalafil, vardenafil), as combining them can cause dangerous drops in blood pressure

Always speak to a pharmacist before using it, especially if you’re taking other medications or have any ongoing health issues.

How to Use Nitrolingual Pump Spray

Always follow the instructions provided with the spray, and ask your pharmacist if you’re unsure. Here’s how to use Nitrolingual safely:

For Sudden Chest Pain (Angina Attack)

  • Use 1 or 2 sprays under your tongue as soon as you feel chest pain starting.
  • Do not inhale the spray. Just let it absorb under your tongue.
  • If the pain doesn’t improve after 5 minutes, you can repeat the dose.
  • You can take up to 3 doses in total (at 5-minute intervals).
  • If the pain doesn’t go away after 3 sprays, get emergency medical help immediately.

To Prevent Chest Pain

  • Use 1 spray under your tongue about 2-3 minutes before doing something that normally causes angina (like climbing stairs or walking uphill).

Tips for Use:

  • Sit or rest while using the spray to avoid feeling faint or dizzy.
  • Always carry the spray with you.
  • Before using a new bottle (or if you haven’t used it in over a week), prime it by spraying once into the air.

Let your pharmacist or doctor know if it seems like the spray is not working as well as it used to as they may need to review your treatment.

Nitrolingual Spray FAQs

You can use Nitrolingual Spray up to three times for a single angina attack, spaced at 5-minute intervals. If chest pain persists after three sprays, get emergency help immediately. Always follow your pharmacist’s guidance for safe use.

Nitrolingual Spray usually works within 1 to 5 minutes, and its effects can last around 30 minutes.

Wait at least 5 minutes after using Nitrolingual Spray before driving or using machines. If you feel dizzy, faint, or unwell, do not drive until you feel better.

Nitrolingual Spray, like all medicines, will expire. You can check the expiry date on the bottle. Also, make sure to prime the spray if it hasn’t been used for over a week. Always keep a spare bottle so you’re not caught without it.

It’s best to avoid alcohol when using Nitrolingual. Alcohol can increase the risk of dizziness or fainting due to low blood pressure.

You should only use Nitrolingual during pregnancy or breastfeeding if advised by a doctor or pharmacist. There is limited information on safety in pregnancy and it’s unknown if GTN passes into breast milk.

Nitrolingual is not specifically licensed to treat shortness of breath. However, if your breathlessness is caused by angina, the spray may help relieve it. Only use it for this purpose if advised by a healthcare professional.

Nitrolingual Pump Spray is a Pharmacy (P) medicine, which means it can only be sold under the supervision of a pharmacist. When you buy Nitrolingual Spray from Click2Pharmacy’s online Angina clinic, you’ll answer a few quick questions to check it’s safe and suitable. Our pharmacists will review your answers and supply the spray if it is appropriate for you.
