What are Otigo Ear Drops used for?

Otigo ear drops are used to relieve symptomatic pain and discomfort caused by middle ear conditions. They are suitable for adults and children and are used to treat:

  • Acute otitis media: sudden inflammation of the middle ear, often caused by a bacterial or viral infection
  • Flu-related middle ear inflammation: middle ear inflammation that develops as a complication of cold and flu
  • Barotraumatic otitis: middle ear damage caused by rapid changes in air pressure, such as during flying or diving

Otigo works locally in the ear to ease pain and symptoms. It is not a cure for the underlying infection but helps manage discomfort while the condition resolves.

Otigo must only be used when the eardrum is intact. If you are unsure, speak to your doctor or pharmacist before using these drops.

How do Otigo Ear Drops work?

Otigo ear drops contain two active ingredients that work together to relieve ear pain.

Phenazone is an analgesic (painkiller) that reduces pain and inflammation in the middle ear. It works locally in the ear canal to ease discomfort at the source.

Lidocaine hydrochloride is a local anaesthetic that numbs the area, providing additional fast-acting pain relief.

Together, these two ingredients help manage the pain associated with middle ear inflammation while the underlying condition resolves.

Who can use Otigo Ear Drops?

Otigo ear drops are suitable for adults and children. They can also be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding if necessary.

Do not use Otigo ear drops if you:

  • Are allergic to phenazone, lidocaine hydrochloride, or any of the other ingredients
  • Have a perforated or burst eardrum, including cases where the eardrum was perforated during a surgical procedure (myringotomy)

Use Otigo with caution and speak to your doctor or pharmacist first if you:

  • Are using this on an infant under 3 months of age
  • Have a blood disorder such as haemoglobinopathy or glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency, as these conditions can increase the risk of a rare blood disorder called methemoglobinemia

Stop using Otigo and contact your doctor if ear discharge develops during treatment, or if symptoms do not improve within 7 days or worsen at any time.

If you are an athlete, be aware that Otigo contains lidocaine, which may produce a positive result in anti-doping tests.

How to Use Otigo Ear Drops

The recommended dose is 4 drops, 2 to 3 times daily into the outer ear canal of the affected ear.

To avoid the discomfort of cold drops, warm the bottle between your hands before use.

  1. Unscrew the bottle cap and attach the dropper applicator
  2. Remove the protective dropper cap
  3. Tilt your head to one side with the affected ear facing upwards
  4. Turn the bottle down and gently squeeze to dispense 4 drops into the ear
  5. Lie flat on your side to allow the drops to settle
  6. Replace the protective dropper cap after use

If symptoms do not improve within 7 days, or worsen at any time, contact your doctor.

If you miss a dose, do not double up at the next application – simply continue with your usual schedule.

Side Effects of Otigo Ear Drops

Like all medicines, Otigo can cause side effects, although not everyone gets them.

Otigo is generally well tolerated, with very few side effects reported.

Rare Side Effects (may affect up to 1 in 1,000 people)

  • Local allergic reactions, such as itching or a maculopapular rash
  • Redness of the auditory canal

If you experience any side effects, speak to your doctor or pharmacist. You can also report side effects directly through the Yellow Card Scheme, which helps improve the safety of medicines for everyone.

Otigo Ear Drops FAQs

Otigo doesn’t state exactly how quickly it starts working in its patient leaflet. However, it contains lidocaine hydrochloride, a local anaesthetic that acts directly in the ear canal, so you may feel relief quite soon after using it.

If you’re unsure how well Otigo is working for you, it’s best to speak with your doctor or pharmacist.

Use Otigo for as long as your doctor has advised. If your symptoms do not improve within 7 days, or if they worsen at any time, stop using the drops and contact your doctor, who may decide to review your treatment.
