What is Rozex Gel used for?

Rozex Gel is used to treat mild to moderate rosacea, a common skin condition that affects the face. The gel helps manage the main symptoms of rosacea, including:

  • Pimples and pustules (spots with pus)
  • Redness and flushing
  • Visible blood vessels
  • Inflamed, irritated skin
  • Rosacea outbreak

The gel targets the inflammatory spots and redness associated with rosacea, helping to bring these symptoms under control with regular use.

How does Rozex Gel work?

Rozex Gel contains the active ingredient metronidazole, an antibiotic that belongs to a group of medicines called antiprotozoal and antibacterial agents. It’s specifically designed to treat the symptoms of rosacea by controlling skin infections and inflammation.

Rosacea is a chronic skin condition that causes redness, visible blood vessels, and inflammatory spots on your face. While the exact cause isn’t fully understood, bacteria and inflammation both contribute to the worsening of rosacea symptoms.

Metronidazole works by reducing the number of bacteria on your skin and calming down the inflammation that causes redness and spots. It also has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties that help control the infection and reduce inflammation that leads to pimples, pustules, and persistent redness.

The gel needs to be used consistently as prescribed to keep your rosacea symptoms under control. Most people need months of treatment, and your doctor will decide how long you need to use Rozex based on how your skin responds.

Who can use Rozex Gel?

Rozex is suitable for adults who have been diagnosed with rosacea and need a topical treatment to manage their symptoms.

However, it’s not suitable for everyone. You should not use Rozex if you:

  • Are allergic to metronidazole or any other ingredients in the gel
  • Have Cockayne syndrome (a rare genetic disorder)

Before using Rozex, speak to your doctor or pharmacist if you:

  • Suffer from any blood disorders
  • Are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding
  • Have sensitive skin or other skin conditions

How to Apply Rozex Gel

Follow these steps to apply Rozex correctly:

  1. Wash the affected areas of your skin with a mild cleanser and pat completely dry.
  2. Apply a thin layer of the gel to all the affected areas. Avoid getting the gel in your eyes.
  3. Rub the gel in well until it’s fully absorbed.
  4. Always replace the cap and wash your hands after use.

Use Rozex twice a day – once in the morning and once in the evening, or as advised by your doctor. For best results, try to apply the gel at roughly the same times each day.

Your doctor will decide how long you need to use Rozex to keep your rosacea under control. You should continue using the gel regularly, even if your symptoms start to improve, as rosacea may respond slowly to treatment. Don’t stop using it until your doctor tells you to.

Rozex 0.75 Gel FAQs

Both Rozex cream and gel contain the same active ingredient (metronidazole 0.75%) and work in the same way to treat rosacea. The choice between cream and gel comes down to personal preference and your skin type.

The gel formulation tends to feel lighter and absorbs more quickly, which some people prefer, especially if they have oily or combination skin. The cream may be more moisturising, which can be helpful if you have dry or sensitive skin. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist about which formulation would work best for you.

Rozex and Mirvaso gel are different medications used to treat different aspects of rosacea. Rozex contains metronidazole and treats the inflammatory spots and pustules associated with rosacea. Mirvaso gel contains brimonidine and is specifically designed to reduce facial redness by constricting blood vessels.

Rozex isn’t a steroid. Unlike steroids, which suppress the immune response, metronidazole helps control rosacea infection and inflammation by reducing bacteria and calming the inflammatory response. This makes it safe to use for longer periods without the risks associated with topical steroids, such as skin thinning.

Rosacea often responds slowly to treatment, so you’ll need to be patient. Most people start to see improvement in their symptoms within 2 to 3 months of using Rozex regularly. However, it can take 3 to 4 months to see the full benefits of treatment. It’s important to continue using the gel as prescribed, even if you don’t see immediate results.

No, you cannot buy Rozex over the counter. Rozex is a prescription-only medicine in the UK. However, you can purchase Rozex online from Click2Pharmacy after completing an online pharmacy consultation. Our licensed pharmacists will review your consultation to make sure Rozex is suitable for you before issuing your prescription.

Metronidazole tablets taken by mouth can react with alcohol. While this reaction is unlikely with Rozex Gel, which is only applied to the skin, you’re advised not to drink alcohol while using it.

If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, it may not be advisable to use Rozex unless your doctor considers it essential. Always speak to your doctor before using Rozex if you’re pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.

You can wear makeup while using Rozex. Apply the gel to clean, dry skin and allow it to absorb fully before applying any makeup or other skincare products.

If you’re applying Rozex in the morning, wait until the gel has completely dried before applying your foundation or other cosmetics. Avoid using heavily fragranced makeup or skincare products or those containing harsh ingredients, as these may irritate your skin further.

Some people may experience their rosacea symptoms getting worse when they first start using Rozex – which is a common side effect. If your symptoms get worse or don’t improve after a few weeks of treatment, speak to your doctor or pharmacist. They may recommend adjusting how often you apply the gel or trying a different treatment approach. If you develop severe irritation, redness, or other concerning symptoms, contact your doctor for advice.
