How does Corsodyl Dental Gel work?

Corsodyl Dental Gel contains chlorhexidine digluconate 1%, an antibacterial agent that targets the bacteria responsible for gum disease and other oral health problems. This dental gel is clinically proven to help reduce bacteria and prevent plaque buildup on your teeth.

When you apply it to your teeth or gums, chlorhexidine disrupts the bacteria, killing them and preventing them from multiplying. It also actively reduces the build-up of dental plaque – the sticky film of bacteria that forms on your teeth and is one of the leading causes of gum disease.

Unlike toothpaste, which is rinsed away quickly, the gel stays in contact with your teeth and gums for longer, giving the active ingredient more time to work. This makes it particularly effective for targeting areas that are already inflamed or infected.

What is Corsodyl Dental Gel used for?

Corsodyl Dental Gel is used to treat gum problems and prevent a range of oral health conditions, including:

  • Gum disease – reduces bacteria and plaque that cause bleeding gums, inflammation, and gingivitis, which is the first stage of gum disease
  • Recurring mouth ulcers – applied directly to sore areas to speed up healing
  • Oral thrush – helps manage recurring fungal infections in the mouth
  • Denture sore mouth – used to clean and disinfect dentures and soothe irritated gum tissue
  • Post-dental surgery care – supports healing and reduces the risk of infection after dental procedures
  • Tooth decay prevention – recommended for people at high risk of cavities

Who can use Corsodyl Dental Gel?

Corsodyl Dental Gel is suitable for adults and children aged 12 and over as part of their regular dental care routine.

However, it may not be right for everyone. Do not use Corsodyl Dental Gel if you:

  • Are allergic to chlorhexidine digluconate or any other ingredient in the gel
  • Are under 12 years old, unless recommended by a dentist

Speak to your dentist or pharmacist before using Corsodyl Dental Gel if you:

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding – the gel can be used, but it’s always best to check with your healthcare provider first
  • Have any open wounds, sores, or injuries in your mouth beyond the condition being treated
  • Are using any other mouth treatments or medicated mouthwashes

How to Use Corsodyl Dental Gel

Gum Disease

Brush your teeth for at least 1 minute once or twice daily using 2cm of gel. Continue treatment for around one month.

Mouth Ulcers & Oral Thrush

To apply gel for mouth ulcers or oral thrush, use a fingertip or cotton bud to apply it directly to the sore areas, once or twice daily for at least 1 minute. Continue use for 2 days after healing has occurred.

Denture Sore Mouth

Thoroughly brush your dentures with 2.5 cm of gel on a moistened toothbrush once or twice daily for about 1 month. Make sure to clean all surfaces of your dentures with 2.5 cm of gel to keep the entire surface free of bacteria.

After Dental Surgery or For Tooth Decay

Use as directed by your dentist to help heal after surgery or to reduce the risk of tooth decay.

Important: Do not use Corsodyl Dental Gel immediately after brushing your teeth with toothpaste. Toothpaste can stop the gel from working. Rinse your mouth thoroughly with water, then wait at least 5 minutes before applying, or use the gel at a different time of day.

Side Effects of Corsodyl Dental Gel

Like all medicines, Corsodyl Dental Gel can cause side effects, although not everyone experiences them.

Stop using the gel and seek immediate medical help if you develop a rash, swelling of the lips, tongue, throat or face, or have difficulty breathing. These could be signs of a severe allergic reaction, which is very rare.

Stop using the gel and tell your dentist if you experience irritation, soreness, or swelling of the mouth.

Other Side Effects

  • Temporary staining of the teeth and tongue – tongue staining disappears when treatment is stopped. Tooth staining can usually be removed by brushing, and you can reduce the risk by avoiding tea, coffee, and red wine – particularly in the hour after use. Any persistent staining can be removed by your dentist or hygienist with a scale and polish. Dentures can be cleaned with denture cleaner.
  • Changes in taste, burning sensation, tingling, or numbness – these are most noticeable when you first start using the gel and usually settle down with continued use.

If you notice any side effects not listed here, speak to your doctor, dentist, or pharmacist. You can also report side effects directly via the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.

Corsodyl Dental Gel FAQs

Corsodyl Dental Gel is available over the counter from pharmacies without a prescription. You can also buy it online from Click2Pharmacy.

The most common reason the gel may not be working as expected is interference from toothpaste. If you’re applying Corsodyl immediately after brushing, the toothpaste ingredients can prevent it from working properly. Always rinse your mouth with water and wait at least 5 minutes after brushing before applying the gel, or use it at a completely different time of day.

It’s also important to use it consistently for the full recommended course. Most people need to use it for around a month before seeing the full benefit for gum disease. If your symptoms persist despite correct use, speak to your dentist.

Yes, Corsodyl Dental Gel can be used after tooth extraction, but only as directed by your dentist. It can help reduce bacteria around the wound and support healing, but your dentist will advise you on when to start using it and how to apply it safely around the extraction site.

Corsodyl Dental Gel can temporarily stain the teeth and tongue in some people. Tooth staining can usually be removed by brushing, and you can reduce the risk by avoiding tea, coffee, and red wine – especially in the hour after applying the gel. Any staining that doesn’t shift with brushing can be removed by your dentist or hygienist during a routine scale and polish. Tongue staining disappears on its own once you stop using the gel.
