What are Utrogestan 100mg Capsules used for?

Utrogestan Capsules are a type of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) used to relieve symptoms of the menopause. They are prescribed alongside an oestrogen-based HRT medication like Progynova tablets, and shouldn’t be taken on their own.

How do Utrogestan Capsules work?

As you approach the menopause, your body produces less progesterone and oestrogen. Utrogestan contains progesterone, a naturally occurring female hormone. When taken as part of a combined HRT regimen, it works alongside oestrogen to balance hormone levels during and after the menopause.

Oestrogen helps manage symptoms like hot flushes, night sweats, and mood changes. Utrogestan protects the womb lining from the effects of oestrogen taken alone. By triggering the shedding of the womb lining each month, it reduces the risk of endometrial hyperplasia (excessive thickening) and endometrial cancer. You may experience some light withdrawal bleeding towards the end of each cycle, similar to a period.

Who can use Utrogestan Capsules?

Utrogestan is suitable for postmenopausal women with a womb who are also taking oestrogen HRT.

Don’t use Utrogestan if you:

  • Are allergic to progesterone, soya, peanut, or any ingredients in the capsule
  • Have or are suspected of having breast cancer or oestrogen-sensitive cancer
  • Have unexplained vaginal bleeding
  • Have untreated endometrial hyperplasia
  • Have or have had a blood clot (DVT/PE) or a clotting disorder
  • Have or recently had heart attack, angina, or stroke
  • Have severe liver disease or abnormal liver tests
  • Have porphyria
  • Are breastfeeding

Speak to a healthcare professional before use if you:

  • Have fibroids or endometriosis
  • Have a family history of breast cancer
  • Have high blood pressure, diabetes, gallstones, or migraines
  • Have asthma, epilepsy, or lupus (SLE)
  • Have liver problems or kidney issues
  • Are overweight or have a clotting risk

How to Take Utrogestan Capsules

  1. Take the capsules at bedtime to reduce dizziness or drowsiness.
  2. Swallow whole with water – don’t chew or open the capsule.
  3. Avoid taking with food, as this increases absorption.
  4. Follow your doctor’s HRT schedule (cyclical or continuous).

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it’s close to your next dose. Don’t double up.

Your doctor or pharmacist will prescribe the lowest effective dose for the shortest time necessary. The usual dose is 200mg (two capsules) taken at bedtime on days 15 to 26 of your 28-day cycle. Your oestrogen HRT should be taken every day throughout the cycle.

An alternative regimen of 100mg taken from day 1 to 25 of the cycle may be prescribed if your doctor or pharmacist feels it is more appropriate. You may experience some withdrawal bleeding (like a period) after the course of capsules each month.

Utrogestan Capsules FAQs

If you’re having surgery, you should tell your surgeon that you’re taking HRT. You will usually need to stop taking Utrogestan four to six weeks before the operation to reduce the risk of developing a blood clot. Ask your doctor or pharmacist when it is safe to start taking it again once you have recovered.

HRT can affect the results of certain blood tests, including liver function tests and hormone tests. If you’re having a blood test, always tell your doctor or the laboratory staff that you’re taking HRT before the sample is taken. This also applies if you’re being given certain anaesthetics, like bupivacaine.

Take the missed dose of Utrogestan as soon as you remember. If it is nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed one and carry on as normal. Don’t take two capsules at once to make up for a forgotten dose. If you’re unsure what to do, speak to your doctor or pharmacist.

The Utrogestan 100mg capsule is licensed to be taken orally to help with managing the menopause. Utrogestan Vaginal 200mg Capsules are a different prescription product that are designed to be used vaginally as part of pregnancy during fertility treatment, or to prevent premature birth.

The main benefits of Utrogestan relate to womb protection. Taking oestrogen alone as HRT can cause the lining of the womb to thicken, which can increase the risk of endometrial hyperplasia and cancer of the womb lining. By adding Utrogestan, the womb lining sheds regularly, preventing this build-up. Utrogestan is only needed if you still have your womb. Women who have had a hysterectomy typically take oestrogen without a progestogen.

The progesterone in Utrogestan (micronised progesterone) is natural and derived from plants. It is bioidentical, meaning it is the same hormone your body makes. This gives it a better safety profile, and some women find they have fewer side effects than when they have had the synthetic progesterones in other HRT treatments.

Utrogestan for Menopause Management

A View From Our Expert

“Utrogestan is an excellent complementary HRT medicine to take alongside an oestrogen-only product. Because it contains natural progesterone rather than a synthetic alternative, many women find it much better tolerated and gentler on the body.”
