Vagirux Tablets for Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)

Medication Name Vagirux 10 Microgram Vaginal Tablets
Medication Form Vaginal tablet
Used For Vaginal dryness, irritation, soreness, and discomfort due to menopause
Who Can Use It Postmenopausal women
Active Ingredient Estradiol
Prescription Required Yes
Patient Information Leaflet Vagirux Patient Information Leaflet

What is Vagirux used for?

Vagirux vaginal tablets are used to treat vaginal dryness and atrophy, conditions caused by falling oestrogen levels after the menopause. As oestrogen declines, the vaginal tissues can become thinner, drier, and less elastic – leading to uncomfortable symptoms that can affect everyday life.

Symptoms of vaginal atrophy include:

How does Vagirux work?

Vagirux contains estradiol, a vaginal oestrogen that is identical to the oestrogen naturally produced by the ovaries. After the menopause, oestrogen levels fall, causing the vaginal tissues to thin and dry out.

Vagirux estradiol pessaries are designed to relieve vaginal dryness, irritation, and discomfort at the source, with the hormone released directly where it is needed.

Because Vagirux acts locally rather than throughout the whole body, very little oestrogen is absorbed into the bloodstream. This means it is unlikely to carry the same risks associated with systemic HRT like oral tablets or patches.

Who can use Vagirux?

Vagirux is suitable for postmenopausal women looking to relieve vaginal symptoms caused by oestrogen deficiency.

Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before using Vagirux if you have or have ever had:

  • Asthma
  • Epilepsy
  • Diabetes
  • Gallstones
  • High blood pressure
  • Migraines or severe headaches
  • A liver disorder
  • Endometriosis or a history of endometrial hyperplasia
  • Fibroids inside your womb
  • Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)
  • A family history of oestrogen-sensitive cancers, such as breast cancer
  • An increased risk of blood clots
  • Very high levels of fat in your blood (triglycerides)
  • Fluid retention due to heart or kidney problems

Who cannot use Vagirux?

Do not use Vagirux if you:

  • Are allergic to estradiol or any of the other ingredients
  • Have or have ever had breast cancer, or are suspected of having it
  • Have or have ever had cancer sensitive to oestrogens, such as cancer of the womb lining (endometrial cancer)
  • Have any unexplained vaginal bleeding
  • Have untreated endometrial hyperplasia (excessive thickening of the womb lining)
  • Have or have ever had a blood clot in a vein (thrombosis), such as deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism
  • Have a blood clotting disorder, such as protein C, protein S or antithrombin deficiency
  • Have or have recently had a disease caused by blood clots in the arteries, such as a heart attack, stroke or angina
  • Have a liver disease where your liver function tests have not returned to normal
  • Have a rare inherited blood disorder called porphyria

How to Use Vagirux Tablets

Vagirux comes with a reusable applicator that can be reused up to 24 times. Follow these steps to insert the tablet:

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly
  2. Pull the plunger out of the applicator until it stops, then place a tablet firmly in the wide end of the applicator
  3. Get into a comfortable position – either lying down or standing with one leg raised
  4. Gently insert the applicator into your vagina until you feel some resistance (around 8-10 cm)
  5. Press the push-button to release the tablet, then withdraw the applicator
  6. Wash your hands again

The tablet will stick to the wall of the vagina straight away and will not fall out when you stand up or move around.

Initial dose: One Vagirux tablet daily for the first two weeks.

Maintenance dose: After the first two weeks, use one vaginal tablet twice a week, leaving 3-4 days between each dose (for example, every Monday and Thursday).

If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember. If it is nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed one and carry on as normal. Do not use two tablets to make up for a forgotten dose.

Side Effects of Vagirux Vaginal Tablets

Like all medicines, Vagirux can cause side effects, though not everyone experiences them. Because Vagirux is a local treatment with a very low dose of oestrogen, side effects are generally less common than with systemic HRT.

Common side effects

  • Headache
  • Stomach pain
  • Vaginal bleeding or spotting
  • Vaginal discharge
  • Vaginal discomfort

Uncommon side effects

  • Vaginal thrush (fungal infection)
  • Nausea
  • Skin rash
  • Weight gain
  • Hot flushes
  • High blood pressure

For a complete list of side effects, read the Vagirux patient information leaflet.

If you experience any severe side effects or signs of an allergic reaction, stop using Vagirux and seek immediate medical attention by calling 999 or going to A&E.

Reporting Vagirux side effects

If you notice any side effects, tell your doctor or pharmacist even if they are not listed here. You can also report side effects through the Yellow Card Scheme. This helps improve the safety of this medicine.

Vagirux Pessaries Reviews

Vagirux Pessaries FAQs

There is no fixed time limit for using Vagirux. Because vaginal atrophy is a chronic condition, symptoms often return if treatment is stopped. A lot of women use it for months or years to maintain relief. Your prescriber will review your treatment regularly to make sure you are still using the lowest effective dose. Do not stop using Vagirux without speaking to your doctor first.

Yes, Vagirux is a form of hormone replacement therapy. It is specifically a local vaginal HRT, which means it delivers oestrogen directly to the vaginal tissues rather than into the bloodstream.

Vagirux is not licensed to treat urinary incontinence. However, because vaginal atrophy can contribute to urinary symptoms such as urgency and frequency, some women find that treating the underlying atrophy with Vagirux helps with these issues. Speak to your doctor if urinary symptoms are affecting you.

Migraines are not listed as a side effect of Vagirux. However, if you experience a migraine-like headache for the first time while using Vagirux, stop using it and see your doctor. If you already suffer from migraines, tell your doctor before starting treatment, as they may want to monitor you more closely.

Vagirux and Vagifem are very similar. Both are vaginal tablets containing estradiol 10 micrograms and are used in the same way to treat the same symptoms. The main difference is the brand name and manufacturer. Vagirux uses a reusable applicator, whereas Vagifem comes with single-use applicators. Both are effective local HRT treatments.

Vagirux is not a treatment for prolapse. However, by improving the health and thickness of vaginal tissues, it may help ease some of the discomfort associated with prolapse. If you have a prolapse, speak to your doctor about the most appropriate treatment options for you.

A burning sensation in the vagina can be a symptom of vaginal atrophy itself, so some women may notice this before treatment begins to take effect. Vaginal discomfort is listed as a common side effect of Vagirux. If burning is severe or persistent, speak to your doctor or pharmacist.

Weight gain is listed as an uncommon side effect of Vagirux, meaning it may affect up to 1 in 100 people. Because Vagirux has very low systemic absorption, weight changes are less likely than with other forms of HRT. Weight gain around the time of menopause is also common, independently of any treatment.

A vaginal fungal infection (thrush) is listed as an uncommon side effect of Vagirux, meaning it may affect up to 1 in 100 people. If you develop symptoms of thrush, like itching, soreness, or a thick white discharge, speak to your pharmacist, who can recommend a suitable treatment.

Vagirux does not require any special storage conditions, so it can be taken with you when travelling. If you are flying, keep it in your hand luggage in its original packaging. Stick to your usual dosing schedule as much as possible, adjusting for any time zone differences if needed.

Vagirux may affect other vaginally applied products. If you are using condoms, diaphragms, or vaginal lubricants, speak to your pharmacist for guidance on timing to avoid any potential interaction.

Most women notice an improvement in their symptoms within 2 to 4 weeks of starting Vagirux. Full benefit may take up to 12 weeks. Continue using Vagirux as directed, even if you do not notice an immediate difference. If there is no improvement after three months, speak to your doctor.
