The new Wegovy tablet was approved in the UK in 2026, the first weight loss pill to offer a proven GLP-1 medicine without a weekly injection. If you’re on Mounjaro and considering switching your weekly jab for a daily tablet, moving across is now an option.
Now that the Wegovy pill is available in the UK, moving across from Mounjaro is possible. Mounjaro contains tirzepatide, and you’d be moving to oral semaglutide, the active ingredient in Wegovy. These are two different medicines, so this isn’t a like-for-like swap, like switching from Wegovy injections to Wegovy tablets, where one dose carries over to the next. You’re beginning a new treatment.
Because of that, a prescriber decides where you start rather than simply matching your dose of Mounjaro. To check you can safely switch from Mounjaro, they’ll look at the dose you’re on now, when you last took it, and how well you’ve been getting on with it. The Wegovy pill is a prescription-only medicine, so a clinical assessment is part of the process before anything is approved.
Both medicines curb appetite and support weight loss, but a weekly Mounjaro jab and a daily Wegovy tablet don’t work in quite the same way.

The two medicines don’t match dose for dose, so your prescriber uses a set dose conversion guide to work out the highest Wegovy dose you can start on. That’s based on your current Mounjaro dose, assuming you’re up to date and haven’t missed more than one dose.

You’re not starting from scratch, because you’re already on Mounjaro. Your body is used to this kind of appetite-suppressing treatment, so a prescriber can safely start you higher, which is where the doses in the table come from.
If you’ve missed more than one dose recently or you’ve been experiencing side effects, your prescriber may suggest a lower dose to help your body adjust. You can also ask to start on a smaller dose of Wegovy if you’d rather ease in more gently.
Before any prescription is approved, you’ll need to answer a few questions about your health and current treatment. This confirms you’re able to switch and helps your prescriber choose the right starting dose.
There’s no need to taper down or wind the dose down first. Just take your last dose as you normally would.
Mounjaro takes around a week to clear your system, so wait a full seven days after your last injection. The neatest way to do it is to take your first Wegovy pill on the day your next injection would have been due, then carry on daily from there. Don’t take Mounjaro and the Wegovy pill together and don’t combine the pill with any other GLP-1 medicine such as Wegovy injections, Ozempic or Rybelsus.
From then on, you’re on a daily Wegovy pill, taken each morning on an empty stomach with a small glass of plain water (up to 120ml) and nothing else. Swallow it whole, don’t crush or chew it and wait at least 30 minutes before you eat, drink anything else or take other tablets. No pen, no needles, no sharps to deal with.
Switching to the Wegovy pill is simple, but the tablet won’t feel identical to the injection from day one.
Mounjaro leans on two of the body’s hunger signals, whereas the pill works through just one, and oral semaglutide takes a short while to reach a steady level in your bloodstream. The result is that hunger can creep back during that first stretch. It’s temporary. Give it a couple of weeks and, as the medicine builds, that fuller-for-longer feeling returns. Landing on the dose that holds your appetite in check tends to be a gradual climb over the months that follow, rather than something that clicks into place straight away.
On side effects, little here should catch you off guard if you’ve been on Mounjaro for a while. The digestive issues that come with GLP-1 treatment, mild nausea or a shift in your bowel habits, can resurface while your body resets, then tail off. The trade-off most people welcome is the end of tender, itchy injection sites.
What happens beyond that depends on your starting point. If you’re still working towards a target weight, the tablet is there to carry that momentum forward. If you’re happy where you are and want to stay there, a maintenance dose does the job without tying you to a weekly jab.

You can take your first Mounjaro injection the day after your last pill and pick the weekly routine back up from there.
