When something upsets the body’s balance, such as motion, a medicine, an anaesthetic, or an inner ear problem, the brain receives signals that trigger nausea and vomiting. Cyclizine helps interrupt these signals before they can take effect, helping to settle the feeling of sickness.

Avoid alcohol while taking cyclizine, as this can increase the side effects of the medicine. You should also avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how cyclizine affects you, as it can cause drowsiness and dizziness.
If you’re taking any other medicines, particularly those for depression, anxiety or sleep problems, tell your doctor or pharmacist before starting cyclizine, as some medicines can interact with it.
Don’t take cyclizine if you’re allergic to any of its ingredients or if you’ve been drinking alcohol. It’s also not suitable for children under 6 years old.
If you have certain health conditions, cyclizine may not be appropriate for you. Speak to your doctor before taking it if you have glaucoma, heart failure, liver problems, epilepsy or an enlarged prostate, among other conditions.
If you know something is likely to make you feel sick, such as travelling, take cyclizine beforehand to help stop nausea before it starts. For travel sickness, it’s best taken 1-2 hours before your journey.
If you’re taking cyclizine for post-operative nausea or another condition, follow the timing advised by your doctor or pharmacist.
Don’t take cyclizine after the expiry date printed on the carton or label after “EXP.” If you have any tablets you no longer need, ask your pharmacist how to dispose of them safely.
Cyclizine hydrochloride 50mg tablets are a prescription-only medicine and can’t be bought over the counter. You can request a prescription through our online clinic by completing a short survey, which our pharmacists will review.
Adults and children aged 12 and over can take cyclizine up to 3 times daily. Children aged 6 to 12 can take half a tablet up to 3 times daily. Don’t exceed the recommended dose.
You should speak to your doctor or pharmacist before taking cyclizine alongside any other antihistamines. Combining antihistamines can increase the risk of side effects such as drowsiness.
Take your next dose at the usual time. Don’t take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
Contact your doctor or the emergency department at your nearest hospital immediately if you take more than you should. Take the leaflet or packaging with you to show what you’ve taken.
