About Flucloxacillin Capsules

Flucloxacillin Capsules contain flucloxacillin 500mg, a narrow-spectrum penicillin antibiotic used to clear bacterial infections. It is specifically designed to treat skin and soft tissue infections such as cellulitis, impetigo, boils, abscesses, and infected wounds or abrasions. Flucloxacillin works by killing the bacteria causing the infection and stopping them from multiplying.

Flucloxacillin Capsules are suitable for adults aged 18 years and over and are usually prescribed as a standard 7-day course:

What Are Flucloxacillin Capsules Used For?

Flucloxacillin Capsules are used to relieve and clear bacterial infections, primarily of the skin and soft tissues. It works by breaking down the bacterial cell wall, which kills the bacteria and effectively heals conditions like impetigo, cellulitis, boils, and infected skin conditions.

Who Are Flucloxacillin Capsules Suitable For?

Flucloxacillin is suitable for adults 18+.

Do not use Flucloxacillin Capsules if you:

  • Are allergic to flucloxacillin, other penicillins, or any listed ingredient
  • Have ever had liver problems or jaundice after taking flucloxacillin previously

Speak to a healthcare professional before use if you:

  • Have kidney or liver problems
  • Are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding
  • Have a history of allergies, especially to other antibiotics (e.g., cephalosporins)
  • Are taking other medications, particularly methotrexate or probenecid

How to Use Flucloxacillin Capsules

  1. Take one 500mg capsule four times a day (e.g., breakfast, lunch, dinner, and bedtime).
  2. Take the medicine on an empty stomach (1 hour before a meal or 2 hours after a meal).
  3. Swallow the capsule whole with a full glass of water. Do not chew or crush it.
  4. Space your doses out as evenly as possible throughout the day.
  5. Complete the full prescribed course, even if your symptoms improve before the medicine is finished.

If you forget a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is nearly time for your next dose. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten one.

Possible Side Effects of Flucloxacillin Capsules

Common side effects:

  • Nausea (feeling sick) or vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Mild stomach upset

Uncommon:

  • Skin rash, hives, or itching

Rare but Serious:

  • Severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) including facial swelling and breathing difficulties
  • Liver problems, including jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes)
  • Severe, persistent, or bloody diarrhoea

If you experience any signs of a severe allergic reaction or liver issues, stop taking the medication and seek immediate medical attention. Liver problems can occasionally occur up to 2 months after finishing the treatment.

Warnings and Precautions

  • Do not stop taking the medication early, as the bacterial infection may return.
  • Always take on an empty stomach for the body to absorb it effectively.
  • Inform your doctor immediately if you develop yellowing of the eyes or skin.
  • If you develop severe diarrhoea, stop use and consult a doctor immediately.

Storage Instructions

  • Store in a cool, dry place below 25°C.
  • Keep in the original packaging to protect from moisture.
  • Keep out of sight and reach of children.
  • Do not use after the expiry date.
