What Are Phenergan Tablets Used For?

Phenergan 25mg tablets are used to treat several different conditions:

Allergies & allergic reactions – including hay fever, skin allergies, and allergic rhinitis. It can relieve cold symptoms, including sneezing, runny nose, watery eyes, and itchy skin rashes.

Motion and travel sickness – preventing and treating nausea and vomiting caused by car, boat, or air travel.

Nausea and vomiting – from various causes, including post-operative nausea or general stomach upset.

Short-term sleep & insomnia problems – Phenergan can be used as a short-term sedative for those who suffer from occasional sleeplessness, though it shouldn’t be used as a regular sleeping aid.

How Do Phenergan Tablets Work?

Phenergan contains promethazine hydrochloride, which works by blocking histamine receptors in your body. Histamine is a chemical your immune system releases during allergic reactions, causing symptoms like sneezing, itching, and watery eyes. By blocking these histamine receptors, Phenergan effectively reduces allergic symptoms.

The medication also affects other receptors in the brain, which explains its additional benefits for nausea, vomiting, and sleep difficulties.

The sedating effect occurs because promethazine crosses into the brain and affects the central nervous system. This same action that causes drowsiness also helps prevent motion sickness and reduces nausea by affecting the areas of the brain that control these functions.

How to Take Phenergan Tablets

For adults, the dose of Phenergan depends on what condition you’re treating:

  • Allergies: Take a single tablet at night, 1-2 times daily
  • Motion sickness: Single tablet the night before the journey, then another after 6-8 hours if necessary
  • Nausea and vomiting: Single tablet taken at night, then another 6-8 hours later if needed
  • Sleep problems: 1-2 tablets taken at night

Always follow the dosage instructions provided by your doctor or pharmacist. Do not exceed the recommended dose, which increases the risk of side effects.

Phenergan 25mg tablets are classified as a Pharmacy (P) medicine in the UK, which means you can buy them over the counter from a registered pharmacy under the supervision of a pharmacist. Phenergan tablets should be swallowed whole, not crushed, chewed, or broken. Crushing the tablets may affect how the medication is absorbed and could alter its effectiveness. If you have difficulty swallowing tablets, speak to your doctor or pharmacist about alternative formulations.

Phenergan tablets have an expiry date printed on the packaging. Do not use the tablets after this date, as they may not work effectively and could potentially be harmful. Always check the expiry date before taking any medication.

No, Phenergan tablets do not need to be refrigerated. Store them at room temperature below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep them in their original packaging to protect them from light.

You should be cautious about taking Phenergan with cold and flu tablets, as many cold and flu medications contain ingredients that can interact with promethazine. Both types of medication can cause drowsiness, and taking them together may increase this effect significantly. Some cold and flu tablets also contain antihistamines, which could lead to an overdose of antihistamine effects.

Always check the ingredients of your cold and flu medication and consult with a pharmacist or doctor before combining them with Phenergan to make sure it’s safe for your specific situation.
