What is an Ulipristal tablet used for?

An Ulipristal tablet is a morning after pill used to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex or if your contraceptive method has failed. This includes situations where:

  • You had sex without contraception
  • A condom tore, slipped, or came off
  • You missed or took a contraceptive pill incorrectly

Taken as a single dose, it must be used within 5 days (120 hours) of unprotected sex. The sooner you take it, the more effective it is likely to be.

This tablet is not for regular use and will not protect you against sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

How does an Ulipristal tablet work?

An Ulipristal tablet contains Ulipristal Acetate, which works by modifying the activity of progesterone, the hormone needed for ovulation. By delaying or inhibiting ovulation, it reduces the chance that a released egg will be fertilised. This is possible because sperm can survive for up to 5 days in the body after intercourse.

This tablet prevents pregnancy from starting and will not interrupt an existing pregnancy.

Who can use an Ulipristal tablet?

Ulipristal is suitable for any woman of childbearing age, including adolescents. You can use Ulipristal at any point in your menstrual cycle.

Do not take this tablet if you:

  • Are allergic to Ulipristal acetate or any of the other ingredients
  • Are already pregnant or think you may be pregnant
  • Have severe liver disease
  • Have severe asthma

Speak to your pharmacist or doctor before taking this tablet if you:

  • Have a late period or symptoms of pregnancy such as breast tenderness or nausea
  • Are currently breastfeeding
  • Have taken any of the following medicines in the last 4 weeks, as they may make this tablet less effective:
    • Epilepsy medicines (such as primidone, phenobarbital, phenytoin, carbamazepine or oxcarbazepine)
    • Tuberculosis medicines (such as rifampicin or rifabutin)
    • HIV medicines (such as ritonavir, efavirenz or nevirapine)
    • The antifungal medicine griseofulvin
    • Herbal remedies containing St John’s wort

Do not take this tablet together with a levonorgestrel emergency contraceptive pill, as this may make it less effective.

How to Take an Ulipristal Tablet

  1. Take Ulipristal 30mg as soon as possible after unprotected sexual intercourse, and no later than 5 days (120 hours)
  2. Swallow the tablet whole. It can be taken with or without food, at any time of day
  3. If you vomit within 3 hours of taking the tablet, take another tablet as soon as possible

After taking the tablet, use condoms every time you have sex until your next period, as it will not prevent pregnancy from further unprotected sex.

If you are using hormonal contraception such as a pill or patch, continue taking it as usual, but use condoms until your next period, as this tablet may temporarily reduce its effectiveness.

Ulipristal Tablet FAQs

Ulipristal tablet contains the same active ingredient as ellaOne, Ulipristal acetate 30 mg, and works in exactly the same way. The difference is that ellaOne is a branded product, while Ulipristal tablet is the generic equivalent. Both are equally effective as emergency contraceptives.

In the UK, the Ulipristal morning after pill is a pharmacy medicine, meaning you can obtain it from a pharmacist without a prescription. You can also order it online through Click2Pharmacy by completing a short consultation, which will be reviewed by one of our licensed pharmacists.

Ulipristal tablet works by delaying ovulation and starts working as soon as you take it. It must be taken within 120 hours (5 days) of unprotected sex to be effective. The sooner you take it, the better the chance of preventing pregnancy.

The Ulipristal tablet is one of the most effective forms of emergency contraception available. Of 100 women who take it, approximately 2 will become pregnant. It is considered more effective than levonorgestrel-based emergency contraceptives, particularly when taken later in the 5-day window.

After taking this tablet, it is normal for your next period to arrive a few days earlier or later than expected. However, if your period is more than 7 days late, or is unusually light or heavy, do a pregnancy test and speak to your doctor.
