| Medication Name | Liraglutide |
| Medication Form | Pre-filled injection pen |
| Used For | Weight management in adults and adolescents (12 years+) with obesity or overweight and associated health conditions |
| Active Ingredient | Liraglutide |
Liraglutide is a daily injectable medication used for long-term weight management. It is prescribed to adults with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 kg/m² or higher, or from 27 kg/m² with weight-related medical conditions. It may also be recommended for adolescents aged 12–17 years who weigh at least 60 kg and have obesity.
Liraglutide is a GLP‑1 receptor agonist that mimics a natural hormone involved in appetite regulation. It helps reduce hunger, increases the feeling of fullness, and slows down stomach emptying, supporting weight loss when combined with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.
This treatment may be suitable for:
It is not recommended for individuals with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia type 2 (MEN 2), or those with known allergies to liraglutide.
Administer the injection subcutaneously once daily in the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. Start with 0.6 mg per day and increase by 0.6 mg each week until reaching a maintenance dose of 3.0 mg/day, if well tolerated. If 3.0 mg is not tolerated within 12 weeks, treatment should be reassessed, especially if less than 5% weight loss has occurred.
Rotate injection sites to minimize skin reactions. Use at the same time each day and always attach a new needle. Unopened pens must be stored in the refrigerator (2–8 °C). Once in use, they can be stored at temperatures below 30 °C for up to 30 days.
The most commonly reported side effects include digestive discomfort and mild injection site reactions. In rare cases, serious complications may occur and require urgent medical evaluation.
Contact a healthcare professional if you experience any severe symptoms. Adverse effects can also be reported through the UK Yellow Card Scheme.
Active Ingredient: Liraglutide 6 mg/mL
