What is Nevolat?

Nevolat is a prescription weight-loss treatment available in the UK that contains the active ingredient liraglutide. It comes in a pre-filled pen format and is used once a day alongside a reduced-calorie diet and regular physical activity.

Liraglutide is a GLP-1 medicine, meaning it works like a hormone your body naturally releases after a meal. By acting on appetite signals in the brain, Nevolat helps you feel fuller for longer, eat less and lose weight over time.

Nevolat contains the same active ingredient as Saxenda at the same strength. It’s prescription-only and must be assessed by a licensed UK pharmacist before being supplied.

How does Nevolat work?

Nevolat injections contain liraglutide, a medicine that works like glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), a hormone your body naturally releases from the intestine after a meal.

By acting on appetite-controlling receptors in your brain, liraglutide helps you:

  • Feel fuller and more satisfied after eating
  • Feel less hungry between meals
  • Eat less food throughout the day

Used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and regular physical activity, Nevolat can aid weight loss gradually over time.

Who can take Nevolat for weight loss?

Nevolat is licensed for adults aged 18 and over who have:

  • A BMI of 30 or more (classified as obese), or
  • A BMI of 27 or more (overweight) along with at least one weight-related health condition, such as:
    • Type 2 diabetes
    • High blood pressure
    • Abnormal levels of fats in the blood
    • Obstructive sleep apnoea

Who can’t take Nevolat?

Don’t use Nevolat if you:

  • Are allergic to liraglutide or any of the other ingredients
  • Are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Are aged 75 or over

Speak to your GP or pharmacist before using Nevolat if you:

  • Have a history of pancreatitis
  • Have severe heart failure
  • Have kidney or liver problems, or are on dialysis
  • Have a severe stomach or gut problem that delays stomach emptying (gastroparesis)
  • Have inflammatory bowel disease
  • Have thyroid disease, thyroid nodules or an enlarged thyroid gland
  • Are due to have surgery under general anaesthesia
  • Have diabetes, especially if you take insulin or a sulfonylurea medicine
  • Experience palpitations or a racing heartbeat at rest
  • Take warfarin or other blood-thinning medicines

Nevolat Dosage

Nevolat treatment uses a gradual dose increase over the first five weeks to help your body adjust and reduce the risk of side effects.

Week Daily Dose
Week 1 0.6mg
Week 2 1.2mg
Week 3 1.8mg
Week 4 2.4mg
Week 5 onwards 3.0mg

Once you reach the 3.0mg maintenance dose in week 5, you’ll stay on this dose for the rest of your treatment. Don’t increase your dose beyond 3.0mg per day.

To continue Nevolat beyond the first 12 weeks, you need to have lost at least 5% of your starting body weight on the 3.0mg daily maintenance dose. Your prescriber will review your progress before approving further treatment.

Is Nevolat effective for weight loss?

Liraglutide, the active ingredient in Nevolat, has been studied extensively as an effective weight loss treatment.

A 56-week study of 3,731 adults without diabetes found that patients taking liraglutide 3.0mg alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity lost an average of 8% of their starting body weight, compared with around 2.6% in the placebo group.

The same trial showed that:

  • 63.2% of patients taking liraglutide lost at least 5% of their starting body weight, compared with 27.1% on placebo
  • 33.1% lost more than 10% of their starting body weight, compared with 10.6% on placebo

Patients who lost at least 4% of their body weight within the first 16 weeks went on to lose an average of around 11% of their starting weight after a full year of treatment, but weight loss results vary from person to person.

Used alongside healthy eating habits, regular exercise and ongoing pharmacist support, Nevolat can help you reach your weight loss goals and work towards a healthy weight.

How to Use Nevolat Weight Loss Injections

Nevolat is given as an injection just under the skin (subcutaneously). The best places to inject are:

  • Your abdomen (front of your waist)
  • The front of your thighs
  • Your upper arm

Change the spot you use each day to reduce the risk of lumps forming under the skin. Don’t inject Nevolat into a vein or muscle.

When to Inject Nevolat

Nevolat is a daily injection that can be taken at any time of day, with or without food. Pick a time that suits your routine and inject at roughly the same time each day to keep levels of the medicine consistent in your body.

How to Inject Nevolat

  1. Wash your hands with soap and water
  2. Take the pen out of the fridge and check that the solution is clear and colourless
  3. Attach a new needle securely
  4. Prime the pen if needed, following the instructions in the pack
  5. Select your prescribed dose using the dose selector
  6. Clean your chosen injection site with an alcohol wipe and let it dry
  7. Pinch the skin and insert the needle at a 90-degree angle
  8. Press and hold the dose button until the dose counter shows 0
  9. Keep the needle in place for at least 6 seconds before removing
  10. Dispose of the used needle safely in a sharps bin
  11. Replace the pen cap and store the pen as directed

For full step-by-step guidance, follow the user instructions included in your Nevolat pack.

Nevolat Side Effects

Like all medicines, Nevolat can cause side effects, although most people tolerate it well. Side effects are most likely when starting treatment or moving up to a higher dose. The gradual dose escalation over the first five weeks helps reduce these effects, and most settle as your body adjusts.

Common Side Effects

The most common side effects when taking Nevolat usually improve within a few days or weeks of starting treatment:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Constipation
  • Headache
  • Indigestion or heartburn
  • Stomach pain or discomfort
  • Heartburn
  • Feeling bloated
  • Wind, flatulence and burping
  • Feeling tired or weak
  • Dizziness
  • Difficulty sleeping, usually only during the first 3 months
  • Low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia), particularly if you also take diabetes medicines
  • Injection site reactions, such as bruising, redness or itching
  • Gallstones
  • Changes in taste

Uncommon Side Effects

  • Dehydration, more likely when starting treatment due to nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea
  • Inflamed gall bladder
  • Delayed stomach emptying
  • Allergic reactions, including skin rash
  • Feeling generally unwell
  • Faster pulse

Rare Side Effects

  • Reduced kidney function
  • Acute kidney failure (signs include reduced urine, a metallic taste in your mouth, or bruising easily)
  • Severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis)

Serious Side Effects

Some side effects are rare but require immediate medical attention. Stop using Nevolat and contact a doctor straight away if you notice:

  • Severe, persistent pain in your stomach that may reach through to your back, with or without nausea or vomiting (a possible sign of pancreatitis)
  • Severe pain in your upper abdomen, often worst on the right side under your ribs (a possible sign of gallstones or an inflamed gall bladder)
  • Symptoms of a severe allergic reaction, such as breathing problems, fast heartbeat or swelling of your face or throat

For the full list, see the Nevolat Patient Information Leaflet.

Reporting Side Effects

If you experience any side effects, even if they aren’t listed in the patient information leaflet, report them to your doctor, pharmacist or nurse. You can also report side effects directly via the Yellow Card Scheme.

Alternatives to Nevolat

If Nevolat isn’t suitable for you, or you’d prefer to try a different weight loss medicine, our clinic offers a range of other options.

Nevolat vs Wegovy

Wegovy contains semaglutide, a different GLP-1 medicine to liraglutide. The main practical difference is dosing frequency: Wegovy is a weekly injection, while Nevolat is taken daily. Clinical studies suggest semaglutide may lead to slightly greater average weight loss than liraglutide.

Nevolat vs Mounjaro

Mounjaro contains tirzepatide, which works on two hormones (GLP-1 and GIP), while Nevolat works on GLP-1 alone. Mounjaro is a weekly injection and has shown the highest average weight loss in clinical trials among current weight loss medicines.

Nevolat vs Saxenda

Nevolat and Saxenda contain the same active ingredient (liraglutide) at the exactly same strengths, in the same pen format, with the same dosing schedule. The main difference between Nevolat and Saxenda is price, with Nevolat typically the more affordable option.

Nevolat vs Orlistat

Orlistat is a weight loss tablet available in the UK that’s taken orally with meals. It works differently to Nevolat as it reduces the amount of fat your body absorbs from food, rather than affecting appetite. Orlistat is generally less effective than GLP-1 injections but may suit patients looking for a non-injectable option.

Important Information

  • Nevolat is a prescription-only medicine (POM) in the UK
  • Keep Nevolat pens and needles out of sight and reach of children
  • Store unused pens in the fridge between 2°C and 8°C
  • Once in use, your pen can be kept in the fridge or at room temperature (below 30°C) for up to one month
  • Don’t freeze Nevolat pens, and keep them away from the freezer compartment
  • Keep the pen cap on when not in use to protect the medicine from light
  • Don’t use Nevolat if the solution isn’t clear and colourless
  • Don’t use Nevolat after the expiry date printed on the carton
  • Tell your prescriber about all other medicines you’re taking, particularly insulin, sulfonylurea diabetes medicines or blood thinners such as warfarin
  • Don’t mix Nevolat with insulin or other injectable medicines
  • Don’t use Nevolat alongside other weight loss medications like Wegovy, Saxenda or Mounjaro
  • Dispose of used needles in a sharps bin and never via household waste

Nevolat FAQs

You can buy Nevolat online from Click2Pharmacy after completing a short consultation. Our licensed UK pharmacists will prescribe this weight loss solution if it’s suitable for you, and your treatment will then be delivered straight to your door.

There’s no direct interaction between Nevolat and alcohol, but alcohol is high in calories and can slow your weight loss progress. Drinking may also make some of the common side effects, such as nausea and dizziness, feel worse. If you choose to drink, stay within UK guidelines and be mindful of how your body responds.

Yes, but switching medicines should always be done under the guidance of a pharmacist or GP. Mounjaro and Nevolat work in slightly different ways and have different dosing schedules, so your prescriber will advise on the right timing and starting dose for your switch.

No. You shouldn’t take liraglutide (the active ingredient in Nevolat and Saxenda) alongside tirzepatide (the active ingredient in Mounjaro), or any other GLP-1 medicine. Combining these treatments isn’t safe and can increase your risk of side effects.

Yes, but the switch should be made under a pharmacist’s or GP’s supervision. Wegovy is a weekly semaglutide injection, while Nevolat is a daily liraglutide injection, so your prescriber will guide you on when to stop Wegovy and how to start Nevolat at the correct dose.

Many people notice changes in their appetite within the first few weeks of starting Nevolat, but visible weight loss is gradual. Most patients begin to see results once they reach the 3.0mg maintenance dose in week 5 and continue treatment alongside a reduced-calorie diet and regular physical activity.

Each Nevolat pen contains 18mg of liraglutide. Once you reach the 3.0mg maintenance dose, each pen lasts around six days. During the first few weeks, as your dose gradually increases, pens last longer because you’re using smaller daily amounts.

Most of the common side effects of Nevolat, such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and headache, settle within a few days or weeks as your body adjusts. Side effects may also flare briefly when your dose is increased. If they feel severe or last longer than expected, speak to your pharmacist or GP.

Nevolat and Saxenda contain the same active ingredient (liraglutide) at the same strength (6mg/ml), in a pre-filled pen format with the same dosing schedule. They work identically, so you can expect the same effects from either medicine. The main difference is brand and price.

There’s no fixed treatment length for Nevolat. Your prescriber will review your progress at 12 weeks and help you set realistic weight loss goals based on how your body responds. You’ll only continue beyond this point if you’ve lost at least 5% of your starting body weight on the 3.0mg dose.

Many people stay on Nevolat for several months or longer alongside lifestyle changes, until they reach their target weight or their prescriber recommends stopping.

Yes. Nevolat is the brand name for Zentiva Pharma UK’s generic version of liraglutide. It contains the same active ingredient, at the same strength and in the same pen format as Saxenda, the original branded version. Generic medicines must meet the same safety and quality standards as their branded equivalents.

Nevolat is approved for ongoing use as part of a long-term weight management plan, and liraglutide for weight loss has been used clinically for several years. Your prescriber will review your treatment regularly to monitor your progress, check tolerability and adjust your plan as needed.

When you stop taking Nevolat, your appetite is likely to return to its previous level, which can make it easier to regain weight. To maintain your results, keep up the diet and exercise habits you built during your weight loss journey. If you’re thinking about stopping, talk to your pharmacist or GP first so they can help you plan the next steps.

If you miss a Nevolat dose and remember within 12 hours of your usual injection time, take it as soon as you remember. If more than 12 hours have passed, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the usual time the following day. Don’t double up or take an extra dose to make up for a missed one.
